1. Follow Up On Last Sunday's Sermon

It was wonderful to have the privilege of being in both worship services last Sunday. Many have commented on the sermon topic. The “ministry of the mouth,” as I said, is always a challenge for me. The message provided a challenge for me.

After the service, I had a conversation with a member of our church family who took the topic in a different direction. Reminding me that unspoken words can also be a cause of pain and devastation in lives. I had to stop and consider this because that had not come to me in preparation. I’m very aware of the damage done by spoken words but had not considered the negative impact of unspoken words. One example would be withholding words like, “I forgive you.”  Or, perhaps, “I don’t agree with you but I still love you.”

Our homework was to consider the words we’ve spoken and the focus of our speech. But, as we do that homework, looking into our hearts for the roots of bad speech habits, I was reminded that our review should include words we’ve not said.

Once again I suggest that as part of our daily devotion, we pray the prayer of Psalm 139: 23-24:
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Some of us are old enough to remember this one-time popular children’s song:

He's still workin' on me
To make me what I ought to be
It took Him just a week
To make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth
And Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
He's still workin' on me

I am so grateful for the fact that God sees us as we are, has a clear vision for who we can be AND that the Spirit has the power to bring such change to our lives as we submit to him. I hope this encourages all of us to long for more faith and holiness to His glory.

2. Labour Day Weekend Worship Bash

Well, here we are…with our “toes” on the edge of September. So this Sunday (Labour Day Sunday), let’s do something different with an air of celebration.

And what would that be? Well, we’re going to have a combined service…but we’ll be combining in the GYM. This will be a first for the sanctuary crew…combining in the gym.

We’re planning a worship bash that will be joyful and uplifting and our preacher du jour will be Pastor Nikki — offering her first sermon at BSBC. Following the service, we’ll have snacks and treats. Can’t wait to see you there!

Pastor Greg

3. Re-Union Sunday: Sept. 11

Please turn to/open your September planning calendar and highlight, Sunday, Sept. 11. This is when the BSBC family will celebrate Re-Union Sunday! That’s right, we’re inviting all members of the BSBC family to ‘unite’ for our launch of a new iteration of ministry at BSBC.

On that Sunday, come out for the Sunday School Launch in the sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. All ages, as is appropriate for our opening family time for fall 2022. After the dynamic opening, children and youth will meet their teachers and head to class for a ‘getting to know you’ time. Adults will be introduced to the Life Group Options for the fall…including those offered on Sunday mornings.

Worship will introduce you to our new Mission Statement, as we refocus on our purpose as God’s people in this place. Recognizing that our effectiveness depends on prayer, you’ll have the opportunity to join the BSBC Re-Union Prayer Team.

Worship services will be followed by our Re-Union BBQ with some unique treats for all ages.

Please consider joining us in person for Re-Union Sunday! However, we continue to remind you that you are the expert on what kinds of interactions are best for you in these days.

4. Anniversary Congratulations

Today, Wednesday, Aug. 31, please offer a prayer of praise and request for blessing on Dale and Donna Morehouse who are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. They’ve walked with the Lord all these years and we can give thanks for their faithfulness to Him.

5. Solo Parent Society

Greetings Church!

Last week I received a contact from one of our former DivorceCare leaders about a new ministry starting in Fredericton – The Solo Parent Society. This ministry has been on her heart since she left the DivorceCare ministry.

I can vouch for the integrity and spiritual maturity of this leadership team. Here are a few details:

We are Solo Parents committed to the restoration of ourselves and our children by growing together in spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health.

While our individual stories are unique, ultimately, we are here because of one common bond: we are parenting alone. Whether divorced, widowed, or never married, we all belong here, no matter how we got here.

Since this is a co-ed group, we want to emphasize that we are here for individual growth and healing. We encourage friendships but this is not a forum to seek out other single parents for dating or romantic connection.

Perhaps you know someone who could benefit from such a supportive group.

Pastor Greg

6. NextGen Events

7. Financial Giving Update

Our Treasurer, Ken Reimer, provides this latest update on our financial stewardship. All members of our church family are encouraged to consider what we each can do to help us reach our financial goals.

Did you know that you can give through a monthly direct deposit or e-transfer in addition to cheques and cash? We would be happy to provide you with a box of dated offering envelopes if you’d like to give with cash or cheque. Please contact the church office for details. To explore other options, please visit our website's ‘giving’ section.

8. Register for Fall Sunday School

Fall is coming, and with it, the start of Sunday School for all ages — starting on Sunday, Sept. 11.

10. Myles on a Mission

About a month ago, we left Canada for a two-year stretch here in the Philippines. We're so grateful for the time we were able to spend traveling in Europe and across central/eastern Canada this summer. God lined up those we wanted to see perfectly, letting truth and wisdom be reflected in conversations with new friends and old. We're happy to be back and settled, after logging a whopping 56 hours in planes, 5+ on public transport, 6 in trains, and 5 on boats.

We started off the semester with an all staff training. Below is a clip of all the staff, local employees, and spouses/children singing a very popular Tagalog worship song. You'll also see a clip of me sharing at the volunteer info night. This was a new initiative in place to help everyone at FA + the surrounding area know how they can be a part of discipleship and outreach. We expected about 40 people to come, and we had over 100!

We loved having only the motorcycle last year. Filling up our tank was about $7, and we could quickly get around the city by swerving through traffic. However, rainy/monsoon season hasn't treated us kindly on it, and we decided to invest in a car! It was definitely a God thing that we managed to find Miguel on facebook marketplace. He provided all the proper papers, and even drove with us into a different part of the city to officially notarize our documents as we begin transferring ownership. We know plenty of people who had dishonest sales and/or unauthorized vehicles. Miguel's a business and tourism student who enjoys doing outreach with the nearby catholic church, which brought up an amazing chance for us to chat about what outreach means biblically.

I (Leah) just got back from a four day high school retreat in the province (countryside)! I had plenty of chances to chat with my homeroom and cabin girls, and felt like I was right back at Camp T. Below are my homeroom girls and I. A few of my girls have been in my homeroom since 2020 when I supervised a middle school group! This retreat was essentially like a youth conference, providing plenty of time to compete in games, get to know new people, worship, and hear words of encouragement from our upperclassmen.

PRAY:

1. Quick transfer of ownership with our new car, and that we don't discover any hidden damages with it.
2. God's guidance as Reuben leads chapel every week in middle school.
3. God's discernment as I (Leah) find our ministry sites for this fall's October ministry trips.

PRAISE:

1. Our house had no issues when we returned, and we have a car! This will also be a blessing to new staff, who we can pick up from the airport and help navigate the city.
2. Students are responding well to all our discipleship and outreach programs. We seem to have enough leaders for them too!

11. Church Library

Our church is blessed with a great library! It has everything from children's books, Bible studies, all types of fiction, and large print. Stop in and take a look! We're open every Sunday after the services.

Please check for overdue books at home if you have used the library. Books can be returned to the locked box outside the library whenever the church is open. If you've borrowed books and cannot return them, please call Sharon at 450-7878.
