1. Labour Day Weekend Worship Bash

Well, here we are…with our “toes” on the edge of September. So, for Labour Day Sunday, let’s do something different with an air of celebration.

And what would that be? Well, we’re going to have a combined service…but we’ll be combining in the GYM. This will be a first for the sanctuary crew…combining in the gym.

We’re planning a worship bash that will be joyful and uplifting and our preacher du jour will be Pastor Nikki — offering her first sermon at BSBC. Following the service, we’ll have snacks and treats. Can’t wait to see you there!

Pastor Greg

2. Baptist Witness & Ministry in Ukraine

As news of the ongoing war continues to pour out of Ukraine, I have found myself wondering about our Ukrainian Baptist brothers and sisters at this unimaginable time. I managed to find two articles which I commend to your attention. One is the latest update from our national office — Canadian Baptist Ministries. The second is an article from Christianity Today. They helped me glimpse the reality for our brothers and sisters and are a means of focusing my prayers for the church in Ukraine.

Let us continue to pray for peace and for the ministry of God’s people in these days.

3. Re-Union Sunday: Sept. 11

Please turn to/open your September planning calendar and highlight, Sunday, Sept. 11. This is when the BSBC family will celebrate Re-Union Sunday! That’s right, we’re inviting all members of the BSBC family to ‘unite’ for our launch of a new iteration of ministry at BSBC.

On that Sunday, come out for the Sunday School Launch in the sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. All ages, as is appropriate for our opening family time for fall 2022. After the dynamic opening, children and youth will meet their teachers and head to class for a ‘getting to know you’ time. Adults will be introduced to the Life Group Options for the fall…including those offered on Sunday mornings.

Worship will introduce you to our new Mission Statement, as we refocus on our purpose as God’s people in this place. Recognizing that our effectiveness depends on prayer, you’ll have the opportunity to join the BSBC Re-Union Prayer Team.

Worship services will be followed by our Re-Union BBQ with some unique treats for all ages.

Please consider joining us in person for Re-Union Sunday! However, we continue to remind you that you are the expert on what kinds of interactions are best for you in these days.

4. Technical Difficulties: Aug. 21

Once again, we experienced technical difficulties and apologize to our online congregation for the experience.

Traditional Service

Those engaging with the traditional service will be hanging in the balance, wondering how Pastor Ross’ sermon ended. From what we can tell, the culprit was our service provider, who reported at 11:30 a.m. that “some customers report having lost service.” So, an exterior cause.

Contemporary Service

Those tuning into the gym were without sound. We are still working on the cause and correction needed. We are sorry for the disruption. Now is a good time to ask you to pray for the members of our technical teams as they work through challenges on a regular basis.

When I harken back to 1990 and a seminary course called, “Christian Teaching,” I’m reminded of the professor’s opening dictum: If it plugs in, don’t use it. My, how times have changed!!! I can’t adequately express my gratitude to those of our fellowship who work to make the ‘plugged in’ expressions of worship, instruction, fellowship and witness a blessing in all our lives.

Pastor Greg

5. WMS: An Invitation to Lunch

An invitation to all our WMS members and others who may be interested in joining our group to attend our first meeting of the fall on Monday, Sept. 12, 1:30 p.m. in the gym. This will be a potluck lunch followed by John Stewart speaking to us about OASIS (our denominations ‘convention’ recently held in Wolfville, NS). All are welcome.

A personal invitation to consider joining our WMS Group:

In support of our (WMS) Women’s Missionary Society, I personally invite interested women in our congregation to join us on Mon. Sept 12th for our opening meeting. Our WMS supports the work of women missionaries. We learn about our missionaries, pray for them, and invite them to a meeting when they are in the area. Tidings is a monthly magazine that we share and usually pick a project that is suggested. The past spring, we did a project with the Pregnancy Center in Saint John.

Our meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 1:30 in the afternoon. Meetings are very relaxed we have fun and close with a cup of tea and a cookie.

Sincerely,

Harriett McNeill
President

6. Memorial Services

Lenna McNeill

A Memorial Service for the Late Lenna McNeill will be held in the church sanctuary on Monday, Aug. 29 at 1:30 p.m.

Lenna was the wife of Hugh McNeill, mother of Althea Savard and her late brother, Phil. Lenna ended her battle with cancer and was promoted to glory on November 5, 2021, at her home in Ottawa with her family at her side.

Throughout her illness she maintained her confidence in the grace of the Lord Jesus, for this life and the life to come. Thank you for praying for her extended family as they gather to celebrate her life and faith.

Pat Green

Please pray for the family of the Late Pat Green who died on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the DECH. She was 76 years old. Pat and her late husband, Rick Green have been long-time members of the BSBC family.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Aug. 25, 4-7 p.m. at McAdams Funeral Home. The funeral service and reception will be held at BSBC on Friday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m.

Pat’s family include her children, Sean Green, his wife Josée and their children Pyper, Maverick and Bodey, Donald Wood, his wife Angie and their children Rebekah, Matthew and Cheyenne Wood and Lorraine Perry and her children Brenna Kuny (Dan) and Alex Stewart (Karen); great-grandchildren, Finley Stewart and William Kuny; brothers, John (Lorraine), Bruce, and Ken (Miriam) MacLeod; special friend, Bob Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews.

7. Prayer Request

We celebrate with Dr. Matthew Akalusi who has accepted his first teaching position following the receipt of his Doctoral Degree earlier this year. This will see Matthew temporarily relocating to Ottawa.

Of this opportunity he writes:

I have been given a temporary appointment as a Part-time Professor to teach second year Ecology in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa. The appointment is for the Fall Term; September to December. I teach my first class on the 7th of September.

Please pray for “Dr. A.” as he stretches into this new opportunity and for the Akalusi family as they remain in Fredericton.

I’d be so bold as to ask you to pray for a permanent position for Matthew. Ideally one in Fredericton 😊

Pastor Greg
