1. The Weakest Link

In August of 2000, a new game show came to the BBC and subsequently spread around the world. It pitted 8 or 9 contestants against each other in a round of general questions over a set period. Then the contestants vote off one of their own — that person being “the weakest link.” If you’re not familiar with the game show, you’ll likely have heard the saying…a chain is only as strong as its ‘weakest link.' On Sunday, July 31, it proved that your Lead Pastor was the weakest link.

My sincere apologies to our online worshippers who tuned in last Sunday morning to join sanctuary worship as usually found on YouTube. Sadly, you were not able to receive the service as usual. And with that apology, my thanks to Claire Geldart (yes, we’re related!) who tried to get you online on Sunday morning and provided those online with information about the morning dilemma.

And to that point, many weeks ago, faithful servants Kellie and Anthony Brown let me know that they would be taking a couple of Sundays off as our Sunday Camera Operator and Technical Director. This is certainly appropriate as, if my math is correct, Kellie and Anthony are on duty about 48 out of 52 Sundays a year. Even though, many weeks ago, I knew of the need for replacements I simply forgot to arrange them. This meant that on July 31 there was no one present to run the camera or to produce the service. Everyone else was in place as should be, except for these key positions.

To our treasured online congregants, again my apologies and promise that this particular ‘technical difficulty' will not be repeated.

Pastor Greg

2. New Sunday Morning Opportunities for Parents & Children

Dear Parents,

We’re excited to share some updates coming to Sunday Children’s Ministry at BSBC! These changes will start this Sunday (Aug. 7) and continue through the fall. We hope these updates will better serve you AND your child(ren).

New Check-In Station

Starting Sunday, we ask that you enter through the Connections Centre doors and stop at the Information Desk, where a Greeter will “check in” your child(ren) and print their labels.

After check-in, you can take your:

  • preschool child(ren) to their room on the first floor, and/or

  • K-Grade 5 children to KidzTown OR with you to the start of the worship service

Children in Worship

Starting this Sunday, you can take your K-Grade 5 child(ren) directly from the check-in station to the Gym for worship. During the service, your child(ren) will be invited to leave you and join the KidzTown workers at the gym door*, who will take them up to KidzTown.

*Please note: As we start out, we’ll be asking parents from the Sanctuary and the Mandarin Service to take their child(ren) to KidzTown until we can work out the system of transitioning to all the services. Thank you for your understanding and help.

Our Goal

These changes are designed to give parents the option to have their children in worship for part of the service. Children who go directly to KidzTown will enjoy activities designed to support that morning's theme. Still, the actual lesson and enrichment activities will happen when all children are together in KidzTown.

Thank You

Thank you for engaging with us in these new procedures. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to the church office at 458-8348 or bsbc@bsbc.nb.ca, and we'll share your message with the appropriate coordinator for a response.

We really appreciate your patience as we navigate these new updates. No doubt, we’ll be learning as we go.

Your Education Committee

3. Have You Thought About Becoming a Member of BSBC?

Becoming a believer in Jesus

The first step to membership is asking Jesus to be your Saviour and Lord. If this step seems unclear to you, please reach out to one of the pastors or a mature friend who is a believer in Jesus. We'd love to have the privilege of sharing how much Jesus loves you, how he died for you and how he has an amazing plan for your life. Becoming a ‘believer’ in Jesus is the first step toward church membership.

Baptism

Baptism by immersion (being fully immersed under the water as we imagine Jesus was when he was baptized in the Jordan River) is the second step toward membership. If Jesus is your Saviour and Lord and you haven’t been baptized, consider following Jesus' invitation to all believers to do so.

Baptism is a way for you to let others know that you plan to live for Jesus. Because it’s a public event, some are reluctant to take this step. Before you rule it out, talk with one of the pastors about what baptism means and how it could be a great blessing in your life. We're planning services of baptism for the fall.

Becoming a member of BSBC

If Jesus is your Lord and Saviour and you’ve been baptized by immersion, please consider making a commitment to the BSBC church family by becoming a full member. This means that you are making a formal commitment to be part of the family.

Taking this step allows you to serve in a variety of ways and to engage with other members in voting on how we do ministry in Jesus’ name. In return, those who are already members welcome you and promise to support and encourage you in your faith.

Interested in learning more?

Reach out to the church office at 458-8348 or bsbc@bsbc.nb.ca or one of the pastors to consider becoming a member and helping us discern where God is leading us in 2022!

Pastor Greg

4. Oasis & You

It’s that time of the year when we invite members of our church family to consider attending as BSBC delegates, our denomination’s annual OASIS gathering, this year in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

This is what we have to say about this year's Oasis

We’re thrilled to share that Oasis 2022 will be held at Acadia University from Aug. 11-13, 2022. We’re also excited to announce that the price for regular registration (adults, kids, & youth) is FREE. This is partly supported by a generous grant from the Atlantic Baptist Foundation.

Our CBAC family can expect a joyous gathering—long overdue—as we celebrate our shared mission together as a denominational family. We’ll worship together, share updates, discuss and vote on family business, and enjoy fellowship. In addition to the main schedule of activities, we’ll be facilitating special events alongside our partner organizations and fun and engaging programs for Oasis Kids and Youth.

What does a BSBC delegate do at Oasis?

Oasis focuses on joyful worship and personally encouraging opportunities to know more about who “we” are as Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada – the family to which BSBC belongs. You’ll hear from our leadership and be encouraged by what God is doing through our family of churches in Atlantic Canada and beyond. Business meetings are kept to a minimum, but you would represent our church in decision-making for our family of churches by voting on issues from our corporate financial budget for 2022-2023 to managing our corporate ministries. You’ll be our ‘voice’ at these meetings. Please note that you have to be a member of BSBC to be a delegate at Oasis.

Costs

There is no registration cost for Oasis 2022. To help with expenses, BSBC will provide a bursary to help cover your costs. It is possible to stay on the Acadia campus for lodging. Information on housing and meals can be found on the event website.

Want to know more?

Contact Pastor Greg at greg@bsbc.nb.ca or the church office.

We need you

It would be wonderful for you to serve in this way and act as a bridge between our denomination and BSBC. A bridge that goes both ways. We’d look forward to you sharing your experiences when you return. Thank you for prayerfully considering serving as a delegate.

Pastor Greg

5. Supporting The Street Ministry: Muffin Drive

Muffins are distributed every Sunday night by our Street Ministry team. We are seeking to re-stock our muffin supply with three dozen muffins for each week’s ministry.

Here are the details:

  • To avoid an over-stocking of the freezer, we're looking for just 3 dozen muffins delivered to the standing freezer in the main kitchen by Sunday of each week

  • Please wrap each muffin individually in clingwrap or place it in a baggie before bringing them to the church (it’s so much easier to access the frozen muffins and more sanitary to serve them when individually wrapped)

  • Please put (1) your name, (2) the date and (3) STREET MINISTRY on the bag in which you put the wrapped muffins to bring them to the freezer

To ensure that we get a fresh supply each week, you are invited to click the link below and fill your name in by the week or weeks in which you will provide a dozen muffins. OR, for that person-to-person interaction, feel free to call the church office at 458-8348, and your information will be taken and added to the plan.

6. NextGen Events

Thank you to all who joined last week for our high school youth event and our outdoor water event at Wilmot! It was a blessing to have that time together!

Children at BSBC

Big changes for parents for sign-in on Sunday mornings!

Starting this Sunday, we ask that when you come into the church with your children (infants to Grade 5), please come through the Connection Centre doors to check in your children for KidzTown or Preschool. A friendly face at the Connection Centre will help with this new sign-in process! Thank you, parents; we appreciate your cooperation!

Youth at BSBC

Movie Night at the Church, Aug. 4, 7 – 9ish p.m. (depending on the movie of choice!)

Youth are encouraged to come out and have a good time together to watch a movie. There will be popcorn, snacks, and soda provided at the event. Youth are encouraged to bring a friend out!

High School Youth: Pool Party at Scott Myles, Aug. 10, 5 – 7 p.m.

As a high school youth group, we will meet at 107 Gravenstein Street in New Maryland to have a pool party and a BBQ! If there are any dietary restrictions, please let Pastor Nikki knows by emailing her at nikki@bsbc.nb.ca, and we will try to have an option for your youth! All high schoolers are welcome to come out to this event!

Killarney Youth Lake day! Aug. 11, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Youth and families are welcome to come out to Killarney Lake for a time by the water together! This will be a time for parents to get to know one another and youth to have fun at the lake as a larger group! We would love to see you out at this event!

If you have any questions or want clarification on anything, please reach out to pastor Nikki at Nikki@bsbc.nb.ca.

7. Sunday Morning Worship: Aug. 7

Once again, we are privileged to have Deacon Charlie Ritchie as preacher this Sunday. Charlie will be ministering in both services.
