1. New Sunday Morning Opportunities for Parents & Children

Dear Parents,

We’re excited to share some updates coming to Sunday Children’s Ministry at BSBC! These changes will start this Sunday (Aug. 7) and continue through the fall. We hope these updates will better serve you AND your child(ren).

New Check-In Station

Starting Sunday, we ask that you enter through the Connections Centre doors and stop at the Information Desk, where a Greeter will “check in” your child(ren) and print their labels.

After check-in, you can take your:

  • preschool child(ren) to their room on the first floor, and/or

  • K-Grade 5 children to KidzTown OR with you to the start of the worship service

Children in Worship

Starting this Sunday, you can take your K-Grade 5 child(ren) directly from the check-in station to the Gym for worship. During the service, your child(ren) will be invited to leave you and join the KidzTown workers at the gym door*, who will take them up to KidzTown.

*Please note: As we start out, we’ll be asking parents from the Sanctuary and the Mandarin Service to take their child(ren) to KidzTown until we can work out the system of transitioning to all the services. Thank you for your understanding and help.

Our Goal

These changes are designed to give parents the option to have their children in worship for part of the service. Children who go directly to KidzTown will enjoy activities designed to support that morning's theme. Still, the actual lesson and enrichment activities will happen when all children are together in KidzTown.

Thank You

Thank you for engaging with us in these new procedures. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to the church office at 458-8348 or bsbc@bsbc.nb.ca, and we'll share your message with the appropriate coordinator for a response.

We really appreciate your patience as we navigate these new updates. No doubt, we’ll be learning as we go.

Your Education Committee

2. Supporting The Street Ministry: Muffin Drive

Muffins are distributed every Sunday night by our Street Ministry team. We are seeking to re-stock our muffin supply with three dozen muffins for each week’s ministry.

Here are the details:

  • To avoid an over-stocking of the freezer, we're looking for just 3 dozen muffins delivered to the standing freezer in the main kitchen by Sunday of each week

  • Please wrap each muffin individually in clingwrap or place it in a baggie before bringing them to the church (it’s so much easier to access the frozen muffins and more sanitary to serve them when individually wrapped)

  • Please put (1) your name, (2) the date and (3) STREET MINISTRY on the bag in which you put the wrapped muffins to bring them to the freezer

To ensure that we get a fresh supply each week, you are invited to click the link below and fill your name in by the week or weeks in which you will provide a dozen muffins. OR, for that person-to-person interaction, feel free to call the church office at 458-8348, and your information will be taken and added to the plan.

3. NextGen Ministries

Children at BSBC

Hands–In Ministry

Coming up on Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Hands–In Ministry will be having a daughter-parent event at Odell Park. Bring a picnic and join Allie Dunfield and her team for a great time of fellowship and connection! In the event of rain, the event will be moved to KidzTown (the second floor of the church) for an indoor picnic and fun! All girls K- grade 5 are welcome! If you have any questions please email Allie at ali.dee@rogers.com.

Big Change for Parents: New Sign-In Location for Sunday mornings!

We are asking that when you come into the church with your children (infants to grade 5) please come through the Connection Centre doors to check-in your children for KidzTown or preschool. There will be a friendly face at the Connection Centre to help with this new sign-in process! Thank you, parents, we appreciate your cooperation!

Youth at BSBC

High School Youth: Pool Party at Scott Myles tonight Aug. 10, 5 – 7 p.m.

As a High School Youth Group, we will be meeting at 107 Gravenstein Street in New Maryland to have a pool party and BBQ! If there are any dietary restrictions please let me know and we will try to have an option for your youth! All High Schoolers are welcome to come out to this event!

Killarney Youth Lake Day: Tomorrow Aug. 11, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Youth and families are welcome to come out to Killarney Lake for a time by the water together! This will be a time for parents to get to know one another, and youth to have a fun time out at the lake as a larger group. We would love to see you out at this event. If you would like further information or have any questions please feel free to ask by emailing nikki@bsbc.nb.ca. Also, bring equipment for games that you would like to play! There will be some things there but if you would like to bring anything else feel free.

In the case of bad weather, we will be meeting at the church for a family games event! You and the family are welcome to bring board games/family games that you enjoy, there will also be games at the church! An email will be sent out Thursday early afternoon if the event has been changed due to weather.

4. Sunday Morning Worship: Aug. 14

For the next two Sundays, both congregations will be blessed with the preaching of Pastor Ross. He will do “double duty” on the 14th and the 21st. Pastor Ross will conclude our series in the book of Ephesians by considering the truth of Ephesians, chapter 6. Please pray for him as he seeks the Spirit’s guidance.

In the sanctuary, Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves will be accompanying the service, which will include the ministry of one of our vocal ensembles and guest soloist, Kathie Berry, who will be accompanied by her husband, David. We welcome the Berry’s to summer ministry at BSBC. David is the organist and choir director at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. And thanks to Deacon Cheryl Gibson, who will lead the sanctuary service.

5. Home Care Needed

Jack Passmore sends the following request:

We need help caring for Ann Passmore when Janet returns to teaching in late August. This would involve about 20 hours a week, at $15/hr, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, the exact times to be negotiated.

The location is at 715 Montgomery St, Fredericton, N.B E3B 2X7. Ann is continent but frail and requires help moving from the bed to the wheelchair, walker, toilet, commode, toilet, etc. She needs joyful, but gentle, encouragement, support, and plenty of TLC.

Please send a short c.v. that includes references, past experiences and qualities that relate to the job, to Naomi Phillips, receptionist@bsbc.nb.ca.

6. Social Action Team: Household Items Needed

Two Ukrainian families, two mothers with their 13-year-old sons, are setting up housekeeping in their own apartment. This will require many household items, big and small. If you would like to assist them by donating some of the items you may have around your home, please contact Sergiy Polyachenko at sergiy.polyachenko@gmail.com for a list of the required items.

7. A Thank You From Sarah Duguid

Dear Church Family,

I would like to express my deepest thanks to everyone for their loving thoughts, prayers and actions during my recent unexpected operation and recovery. It was not an easy time but I feel grateful that I was able to experience peace as I claimed the promise from Deuteronomy 31:8 "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

The recovery process was a challenge but now I am feeling stronger. We have been able to hike and swim over the summer. Best of all I was able to attend our son's wedding in Halifax.

Peter and I are so thankful for our BSBC family who help carry each other's burdens and who love each other. We were overwhelmed by the support we felt. Thank you again!

Sarah Duguid

8. Congratulations

We give thanks for the safe arrival of baby Hudson Alexander DeMerchant, born on Thursday, Aug. 4 to Emily DeMerchant. Hudson is a first grandson for Sandra and Bill DeMerchant and a great-grandson for Charlie and Donna Colwell.

9. Bereavement

As a church family, you are invited to pray for Jackie Cook and family on the passing, Saturday, Aug. 6 of her beloved husband, Greg. Greg and Jackie have been decades-long members of the BSBC family and Greg, specifically, has given years of quiet, unobtrusive and significant leadership in our church’s life, always strengthening our witness in Fredericton and beyond. This in addition to a servant-heart that led him to share countless hours of wisdom and engagement beyond our church family.

From the obituary:

Greg touched many lives over the years, some well-known (leaders and politicians), some famous (Willie O’Ree and Bo Derek), but most just regular folks who he saw at work, or church, or from his bench at the market every Saturday. He spent a lifetime in service to others, with a special place in his heart for the intellectually challenged, the disadvantaged and the marginalized. He gave countless volunteer hours to Brunswick Street Baptist Church, Jobs Unlimited, Fredericton school board, Crandall University, and a multitude of others.

His talents were varied, often underappreciated, and certainly not flaunted. He loved music, had a good-to-quite-good singing voice and knew the words to almost every song ever written. He was a dancer, most enthusiastically with his granddaughters; a poet, a witty raconteur, and a one-time movie actor. He was quite an athlete: a solid shortstop, an alleged gymnast, and a definite possessor of old-man strength. He was a sneaky bridge player, a math tutor, a terrific cook and always insisted that the only things you need to know to be a mechanical engineer are “F=ma” and “you can’t push a rope”.

The lives Greg touched the most, of course, were his family. He was a loving husband for 50 years, the greatest father of all time (at least in the opinion of his three sons), a cherished “Papa” to his nine grandchildren, and the solid rock of the extended Cook family.

Through all the years, and all his varied roles, Greg became known as the guy who could reliably and honorably get things done. His motto was “you’re only as good as your word” – and he lived it every day. His life and character were underpinned by his steadfast Christian faith, living out the words of Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”.

And speaking of family: Greg married Jacqueline (Jackie) Cruikshank in 1971, who survives him. Greg is also survived by his three sons Geoff (Alana Skelton), Jonathan (Meghan Berry) and Peter (Sarah Fenton), his nine adoring grandchildren, and his four sisters Janet (Bev Jewett), Karen (Sterling White), Dawn George and Diane (Marcus Hodgson). Greg was predeceased by parents Wendell and Marjorie, and brother Gary.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 12 between 4 and 8 pm at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, August 13 at 2 pm from the sanctuary of Brunswick Street Baptist Church.

Thank you for praying the Cook family through this week and the weeks that follow. Please read the full obituary: https://yorkfh.com/tribute/details/7639/Gregory-Cook/obituary.html#tribute-start
