  19. This Week @ BSBC

1. Welcome New Member: Sam Tingley

Deacon Dwight Dunfield and Deacon Sheila Ross met with our newest member Sam Tingley on July 12, 2023. We are delighted to welcome him into membership at Brunswick Street Baptist Church.

Sam grew up at BSBC was baptized here in 2015 after accepting Christ as his saviour in 2006 just before turning 4. Being part of a missions trip in 2018 helping homeless youth ignited the passion he has for working with youth. We are thrilled to have him as one of our summer students this year (our youth affectionately call him “Sparkles”) — and he wants to keep helping out with children's and youth ministry.

He was given the right hand (well, left, since his right one is broken!) of fellowship Sunday, July 30. With his vibrant faith, he is a wonderful addition to our membership. Welcome Sam!

2. Tidal Impact Update: Missions Accomplished!

God was hard at work changing our hearts, improving relationships, and strengthening us to do His work at Tidal Impact. We worked hard in the heat helping a boys and girls club get ready to open some facilities that were shut down during COVID. The diligence and energy of our youth to push through physical adversities was incredibly admirable.

Our food drive was a massive success as the entire group was able to bring in over 10,500 pounds of food to feed 4,400 families in need. However, God was not simply using us to help others. He was using our work for Him to transform us. The week was inspiring to see and showed us again that God is still working in the hearts of young people and using them to further His kingdom all over the world. There are so many stories to tell. We are particularly grateful to our BSBC family for your tremendous support of our mission to Tidal Impact.

3. Pastor Greg Medical Leave — Returning Oct. 2

Upon the recommendation of his medical team, and affirmed by the Board of Deacons, Pastor Greg Geldart will be on medical leave from August 15 to October 2, 2023. The pastoral team (Ross, Nikki, Changbin, and Dr. Keith), along with support from Kevin Culberson, will be working with the Board of Deacons to prepare for the Fall.

Thank you for your on-going prayers for each member of our pastoral staff, leaders and their families.

Denise Mersereau, Chair

Board of Deacons

4. Financial Report to July 31, 2023

5. Mandarin Congregation Marriage Retreat: Aug. 4 – 6

The Mandarin Congregation will be hosting a Marriage Retreat this weekend, August 4 – 6, at the Ramada Hotel. This retreat will be the first in the Atlantic provinces from the Chinese Family for Christ (CCFC Canada located in Toronto) which allows couples to build their marriage in Christ. There are 3 couples trained by CCFC Canada who will lead the retreat (one couple from Toronto, one couple from Montreal and Pastor Changbin Tian & Jian Zhang). We already have 6 couples who will be joining the retreat.

Please pray for us, may our Lord transform all the couples’ heart and learn to build their family in Christ.

Respectfully submitted,

Pastor Changbin

6. Family Sunday: August 6

Hey folks! Coming up next weekend is another long weekend. We will be keeping our family with us in the worship services on Sunday, August 6. We are giving our Preschool and KidzTown staff, leaders, and volunteers a chance to join us for worship. Our summer student and newest member Sam Tingley will be leading the children’s portion of our service.

Our planned children’s activities will resume Sunday, August 13. Thank you for loving our family and our children in this way.

7. Ordination Council: August 8

Fancy a Road Trip for Pastor Ross?

Over the last several months, Pastor Ross has been working very hard on his journey to Ordination. He has completed the required coursework and written his 15-page Statement of Faith… his faith is BIG! The final step for Pastor Ross is to appear before the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada’s Examining Council for Ordination. This appointment has been confirmed for Tuesday, August 8 at 4:15 p.m. in Room 177, Main Level of Stultz Hall, Crandall University, 333 Gorge Road, Moncton.

During this appointment, Pastor Ross will be answering questions about his theological statement to the Examining Council which is made up of 34 members. Following this, a recommendation letter from the church will be presented to the Council, they will have a discussion, make a decision, and then communicate the decision to Pastor Ross at the conclusion of the appointment. This entire process will take approximately 75 minutes.

How can you support Pastor Ross between now and August 8?

  • Pray that he can be rested and spiritually prepared for this very significant appointment.

  • Pray for Fi and their girls as they support him in the days leading up to August 8.

  • Take a road trip! Members of the church family are welcome to attend the appointment in support of Pastor Ross on August 8. If you plan to attend, there is a parking lot near Stultz Hall where you can park for free. What a practical way to show your individual support and to collectively show that the Brunswick Street family affirms his calling to ministry and ordination!

Denise Mersereau

Chair, Board of Deacons

8. Oasis: Aug. 10 – 12, 2023

Each year, the Baptist churches in Atlantic Canada send ‘delegates’ to OASIS, the annual gathering of the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. This is an annual gathering for worship, discipleship, and to consider how we share together in living out the love of Jesus “everywhere”. Give a read:

We’re excited to welcome you to Oasis on August 10-12, 2023 at Crandall University in Moncton, New Brunswick

Our CBAC family can expect a joy-filled gathering as we celebrate our shared mission and stories of God’s work in this denominational family. We’ll worship together, share updates, discuss and vote on family business, and enjoy fellowship. In addition to the main schedule of activities, we’ll be facilitating special events alongside our partner organizations, as well as fun and engaging programs for kids and youth.

This year we’re thrilled to have Jason Ballard as our guest speaker and to hear a message for our CBAC family from Dr. Terry Atkinson as well.

This year, we can send 10 delegates. To be a delegate for BSBC you must be a member of BSBC. Otherwise, you can attend OASIS as a guest — everything but vote on business. Are you interested in being one of our delegates to OASIS? We are able to provide a stipend of $200 to cover your registration and help with expenses. We have space for six more delegates.

If you are able to attend, please contact Naomi in the church office (naomi.phillips@bsbc.nb.ca) and she will complete your registration.

9. Mandarin Baptism: August 13

Let’s celebrate a big day on Sunday, August 13 at 12:00 noon: 6 brothers and sisters will be baptized on that day. They will show their faith in Christ through the baptism.

May our Lord bless them and lead them in their life. All are very welcome to join us and celebrate with them.

Respectfully submitted,

Pastor Changbin
