1. Welcoming New Members

I believe we all find it encouraging when individuals express a desire to “formalize” their relationship with BSBC by becoming members of the church family. Here at BSBC, we seek to make involvement in the life of our community open to all, including the ability to worship, learn and, in some ways, serve. We have many in our church family who are identified as adherents. But we encourage everyone to consider becoming “members” of the BSBC family.

“Membership” flows two ways. It is an expression of an individual’s desire to publicly identify with the church family as a partner in determining the direction in which our church family moves by having a vote at business meetings and the ability to serve on Committees and/or on one of our two boards, Deacons and Management. The other direction in which membership flows is a commitment from the existing members of this church family to you, to support you, encourage you and join with you in directing the life of BSBC.

Since the beginning of 2023, we have been blessed with the addition of seven new members and it’s my pleasure to introduce them to you below.

If you are not currently a member of BSBC I hope that the testimony of these folks will encourage you to consider if the time is right to take that step. Any of your pastors would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you. Just let us know.

Yours in the Body of Christ,

Pastor Greg

Deborah VanSlyke

Early in the year then chairman of the Board of Deacon, Ron McMullin and I had the privilege of welcoming Deborah VanSlyke into membership. Deborah has been long integrated into the BSBC family and many will remember her moving testimony at her fall baptism. Deborah serves as our Financial Secretary. Here’s what she had to say:

I grew up attending Brunswick Street Baptist Church and starting as a teenager, I played handbells, participated in Sunday School, attended youth group, and volunteered with younger children. It was through these activities and friends I knew that I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior when I was 16. During the next 40 years I earned two degrees, got married to Stephen, had two children (Jeremy and Kristen) and was involved in numerous church activities which were very rewarding. Yet, I knew I had not been baptized – still, I thought it would happen but wasn’t sure when.

More than 2 years ago, I had brain surgery to remove a 6 cm x 7 cm meningioma which was made further complicated by a debilitating stroke I had at the same time. I was in the hospital for 11 weeks and still had further work to do at home and the hospital for my recovery. Before the surgery, I knew the risks and confirmed with Stephen and Pastor Greg that I would be baptized – there was no talking me out of it. I’m not where I was, but thankful how far I’ve come. BSBC has always been my church and it was where I was baptized last fall. I look forward to continuing to be involved in worship, fellowship, and service.

David & Rachel Nesbitt

Rachel and David are on their second ‘round’ at BSBC – having returned to Canada after a time in the US. Sunday mornings you can often find David at the sound desk in the gym. Rachel has been a catalyst for BSBC’s refugee sponsorship ministry and helps host our Wednesday evening potluck suppers in the gym. Here’s a note from the Nesbitts and an “alternate” photo they offered us!

Hello! We live in Fredericton with our children (Ewan, Liam, Cora, Rory, and Eva). If you’d like to get to know us better, you can find us in the gym on Sundays or Wednesdays at potluck. We decided to become members to confirm that we are all in.

Robert & Cathie Wilms

In August of last year, Margaret and I arrived home from the cottage to find we had new neighbours across the hall in unit 103. That’s how we met these two new members who will introduce themselves!

A note from Robert:

I live at 700 Cliffe Street, Unit 103, Fredericton, NB.

My wife and I recently moved from Fort Erie, Ontario, in August of 2022. We moved here to be closer to the grandchildren and the rest of the family. I enjoy going fishing, watching sports such as Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Toronto Argonauts. Also enjoy watching Nascar and especially curling. I am 64 years old, and disabled. I am not capable of writing because of essential tremors, as well as other health problems I will not go into. I enjoy spending time at the library using the computer to print things out such as this Bio. My wife and I enjoy meeting new people and going out for lunch with a group from the church, as well as the senior’s luncheon. We also like to play Bingo [Radio Bingo]. What made us come to this church is when we found out a Pastor from the church lives in the building. So we came to the church service and were welcomed with open arms. We really enjoy coming out to the church. My wife and I would like to thank you for welcoming us into the Church. God bless everyone. Thank you.

A note from Cathie:

Hello. My name is Cathie Wilms. I moved from Ontario with my husband, last August to this wonderful province. God directed us to this church by providing a home in the same building as your pastor. With God there are no coincidences. So, he led us here. Moving to New Brunswick was an answer to prayer. Please ask me about it. I have poor eyesight, so if I don’t acknowledge you, it’s because I don’t recognize you. If you come up to me and tell me who you are I’ll be sure to give you a hug. I have one living daughter and three grandchildren. I read, write poetry and sometimes bake.

Indeed, Cathie wrote a poem about becoming a member of BSBC:

BRUNSWICK STREET BAPTIST CHURCH
It’s wonderful
To Belong
To the Family of God.
I feel the Love
From each and everyone
Like God’s sent from above.
So, thank you
For taking us in
Now we belong
To you and to Him.

Riley & Olivia Burtt

The youngest of our recent new members are Riley and Olivia Burtt. When they came to us, over a year ago, they did not share the same last name! But a late December wedding ceremony in the sanctuary of BSBC changed all that. Riley works as a carpenter and Olivia is a student in criminology. Since membership, Riley has become a member of the Youth Team of our Education Committee. Olivia is discerning her place of service. We look forward to lots of years of growing and serving together with the Burtts.

Check out these great reads!

6. Upcoming Prayer/Healing Services

If you were not able to attend the April 16th “Healing Service” there’s good news.  The next service will be held on Sunday, April 30 and another on Sunday, May 7 at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary. This is a simple time of worship and prayer with the invitation for those who attend to come to a prayer station and have a brother and a sister hear your request, with your permission anoint you with oil, and pray over you and with you. The emphasis is on simple. Sitting in the pew for the whole time is welcome. You won’t be forced to pray publicly; such opportunities may be offered but only those who wish will engage in this way. As I said, the emphasis is on simple. If you have never been to a “Healing Service” come, attend, and engage in a way that feels right at this point in your spiritual journey.

Pastor Greg

7. Can You Bless A Local Family?

Your social Action Team would like to share with our church family an opportunity to bless a local refugee family and the individual refugee that we are sponsoring. Rachel Nesbitt has shared the following news and requests with us.

REFUGEE FAMILY REQUEST

The sister of the Syrian refugee family we are sponsoring is pregnant with a baby girl due in early June. She lives in Fredericton with her husband and 4 daughters. She does not have much of anything for the baby yet, and I would love to collect some items from anyone who feels stirred to show generosity in this way.

Items needed:

  • Rear-facing car seat (new or unexpired)

  • Clothing (size newborn and 0-3 months)

  • Gift cards are also welcome (Carters, Babies-R-Us, Jumping Jacks, etc.)

  • Please contact me, Rachel Nesbitt, if you’d like to help bless this family at renesbitt@gmail.com

SINGLE REFUGEE REQUEST

Lori Wightman is our coordinator with our new friend, Souaibou, who is now settled in his apartment and has a new support worker who can help us communicate with him as he engages in language study in English and French through Fredericton’s Multi-Cultural Language Studies group.  Visiting with him this past week Lori identified a few additional needs that would help a single guy get the most out of his new place.  If can provide any of the following, please contact the church office to let us know you have the item(s) so we don’t get multiples of the same thing.  And then, please drop your item off at the office and we’ll get it to Lori who will take it to Souaibou.

Thanks for considering:

  • Large pot (Dutch oven-ish)

  • Baking Sheet

  • Can Opener

  • Tea Pot

  • 2 or More Kitchen Chairs

  • 1 Living Room Chair

8. A Note For Our Street Ministry Muffin Makers

We are so grateful for those who are partnering with our street ministry team by providing muffins which they share with those they meet. It’s very helpful for the team if you would wrap each muffin individually and then place them in a bag and write the date of delivery on the bag. Thank you for these extra steps.

9. This Sunday’s Worship Services

The gym worship service will be under the musical leadership of Julianne Moore and friends.  In the sanctuary, the service will feature musical leadership by the Sanctuary Choir and soloist Pascale Butt.

In the sanctuary service, Pastor Ross will be continuing the series, “Things Jesus Didn’t Say” with this week’s focus refuting the idea that if we follow Jesus we’ll never suffer, and life will always be good.

In the gym, Dr. Keith will be continuing his series in the book of Mark with this week’s sermon entitled Taxes and Time Management drawing on Mark 2:13-28. To introduce to the sermon he writes: The first disciples in Mark chapter 1 are called from the fishing industry. Given the fear of water that historically accompany the Israelites, it takes some courage to counter such fears by stepping into a boat every morning, and it is a big step to leave everything and follow Jesus. But are there disciples from other vocational groups and walks of life? Alongside Peter and Andrew, in chapter 2 we meet Levi the tax collector, a loathed occupation that was compared with the worst groups in society and riddled with corruption. Who is Levi, and why does Jesus call him to leave the toll booth for an entirely new pathway? Is Levi the same figure as Matthew, the well-know writer of another Gospel narrative? Notably, the call of Levi is followed up in chapter 2 with some short scenes that deal with wineskins and the sabbath, and these episodes address such practical matters as our highest priorities and (yes!) even the relentless pursuit of hurry. This week we pause to consider some immediate points of application in Mark chapter 2 that have numerous implications for our Atlantic Canadian lives right now.

Whether in-person or online, we hope that you will join us for our worship services this fourth Sunday in April.

13. Meals On Wheels: An Opportunity to Care

Recently Dr. Keith preached in the sanctuary service on the account of the four friends who were determined to care for their friend who needed to have the power of Jesus poured out on his life. These ‘stretcher bearers’ were fulfilling the intentions of Galatians 6. “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” We were never meant to do life alone. We need the love and care of others, as much as we are needed by others in the same ways. There are so many ways to be ‘stretcher bearers’.

For those who cook, I’m back to invite you to consider providing one meal a week for a couple in our church family who are each shouldering challenging health burdens. Just click the link below and register to provide a meal sometime in that week. Names and contact information will be provided after registering. If you are not able to deliver the meal to the northside, just let us know and we’ll arrange delivery for you. There are no dietary restrictions.

THANK YOU TO ALL who helped in the previous weeks. Know that your ‘carrying’ has been a blessing of Christ in these lives.

Pastor Greg
