1. Call for Baptisms
Have you ever thought about getting baptised but still have a lot of questions?
If so, hopefully we can help answer or at least encourage further conversation.
An Overview of Baptism
Baptism is a symbol. It is to show the world that you love, trust and have put your hope in Christ. It’s like a wedding ring.
Let’s say you were not married, but if you put a wedding ring on your finger, would that make you married? Of course not! Similarly, you can be baptised in a church, but that doesn’t make you a follower of Jesus. Now let’s say you are married, but you just don’t have a ring on your finger. Would that mean you weren’t married? No! Of course you would still be married! See, you can be a follower of Jesus, but not baptised, but your sin is still paid for and forgiven by God. But imagine that you truly are married and really, really love your spouse. Would you wear a wedding ring? Of course! When we are in love, we are happy, even proud, to wear a ring and let the whole world know it! In the same way, if you have trusted Jesus to save you from sin, and He is the lord and joy of your life, then we will want everyone to know about it! So, baptism is a statement to everyone who sees it that I have trusted Jesus for my salvation, and I’m committed to living for Him.
Why should I think about getting baptised?
If you have made a commitment to following Jesus, being baptised is an act of obedience to His command when he tells us in Matthew 28: 19 – 20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In baptism we confirm that we choose to follow Jesus with our life, to repent of our sin, die to our old self and raise again as the new creation in Christ, born of water and of the Spirit (John 3:5).
In Mark 1: 9 – 11, we read that Jesus himself was baptised, and that is the moment where we read, “At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
In being baptised we follow the example set out to us by Jesus himself. It is a public declaration that we identify as a follower of Jesus. Baptism is a visible external sign of our move from death to life, it is a symbol of Jesus burial and resurrection and our joining of Him in this, as we are told in Colossians 2:12, “having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
Baptism does not make you a believer; it shows that you already are one! You are not ‘saved’ by being baptised, but by your faith in Jesus alone! As it says in Ephesians 2: 8 – 9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Baptism also joins us into the wider ‘family of believers’ as we are told in 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, “For we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body.” It is an visible image of the invisible grace that has saved us!
So, who should be baptised?
Every person who has made the decision to follow Jesus! When Paul writes to the believers in Rome, he assumes that all of them have been baptised (Romans 6). The one, and only requirement for baptism is belief in Christ!
“Those who accepted his message were baptised.” Acts 2:41
Followers of Jesus in the New Testament were baptised the same day! As soon as a person decides to follow Jesus, they can be, and are encouraged to be baptised.
In Acts 8 we read of a conversation Philip has while travelling along the road with an Ethiopian eunuch who hears the truth about Jesus for the first time and his response. “Then Philip began with that very passage of scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptised?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him.” Acts 8:35-39

2. Days for Girls Update
The Days for Girls local chapter is deeply grateful for the generous support and space provided by BSBC. Thanks to this partnership, from February 11th to 20th, 600 kits will be delivered to girls in Honduras living in extreme poverty. These kits are life-changing gifts, offering hope and dignity.
We ask for your prayers for the four women who will be distributing these kits. Please pray for their safety and the success of their mission. Also, keep the 600 girls and women receiving these kits in your prayers, that they may feel cherished and loved.
3. New Year’s Concert Special Thanks
Praise the Lord, we are so thankful for all the generous people who joined our New Year’s Concert on Jan 02. 12 young musicians and 5 guest artists held a memorable recital at BSBC, raising $1,200 CAD to support the Fredericton Community Kitchen.

4. GriefShare: Thursdays
If you are suffering the loss of a loved one, GriefShare, a Christian-based video-discussion support group, is being offered in the Family Room of the Family Life Center at Brunswick Street Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Thursdays from 7-9 pm for 13 weeks. Please call 458-8348 for information and to register.
5. DivorceCare: Tuesdays
If you are going through marital separation, long term relationship break-up or divorce, or know someone who is going through that same traumatic life event, please come to DivorceCare, or invite the individual to consider joining our 13-week DivorceCare program, a ministry which will run on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM in the Family Room of Brunswick Street Baptist Church.
Each evening includes the presentation of videos with expert counsellors sharing insights on how to move from hurting to healing. In addition, supportive conversation provides encouragement to participants led by Gloria Tranquilla, Pauline Harvey, and Bryan McWilliam. Each session stands on its own so participants can join any week.

6. Muffin Ministry
On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way.
Our Street Ministry team need muffins as soon as February 23rd for our Sunday night outreach program. Moving forward, we require 3 dozen muffins each week. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.
Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for Him.
7. Fredericton Christian Men’s Retreat 2025
The Fredericton Christian Men’s Retreat is back and will be held from February 7th to 9th, 2025, at Circle Square Snider Mountain Ranch. This year’s theme is "Listen," and we are excited to welcome Peter Beckwith as our theme speaker. Peter will challenge and inspire us to deepen our understanding of how to listen to God.

The cost for the retreat is $270, with an optional Friday night dinner for an additional $10. If cost is a concern, sponsorships are available to ensure everyone can participate.

10. Reducing the Risk Training: Feb 16
Are you currently serving, or interested in serving, with children, youth, or vulnerable adults in our church? Join us for Reducing the Risk Training to ensure you are fully equipped and informed about our child and vulnerable persons protection policy. This training is essential for anyone working with these groups within our church.

This brief but important session will help you understand our policies and practices for creating a safe environment for all. 11. NextGen Ministry (Children & Youth)

Scouts: Kindergarten – Grade 5
BSBC offers an exciting scouting program for boys from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Through outdoor adventures, engaging activities, and meaningful community service projects, boys learn to live out the Great Commission—growing in their love for God and serving their neighbors.
Sunday School: 9:30 – 10:15 AM
Join us for Sunday School, a time of learning and growth for our children and youth, from Pre-K to Grade 12. While the kids explore age-specific teachings about the Gospel, parents can enjoy tea, coffee, and fellowship in the Connection Centre and Family Room.

BSBC is hosting a special games night with Corbett and Journey Church! Come to Brunswick Street Baptist Church ready for fun, laughter, and a mix of favorite games from each church. Bring your friends and stay for an optional hangout until 8:30 PM.

Tidal Impact: July 8-13, 2025
Tidal Impact is Atlantic Canada’s premier youth missional event, with our denomination. The model for the event is simple – a visiting church partners with a host church for a life-changing week of making an impact. A week full of serving the community and sharing the love of Jesus.
Throughout the week students (middle school & high school students) will be challenged to practice and embrace being on mission with Jesus every day, everywhere. Students will experience high. energy rallies, neighbouring opportunities, serving, and lot’s of FUN! It has the potential to be an amazing win for your youth ministry, church and for the entire host community.
We will be going to PEI this year for Tidal Impact. Registration is open. The cost is 200 dollars a student, and we will be raising the remaining funds that are needed for travel etc. All are welcome to come join for this week long local missions trip, if finances are an issue please contact Pastor Nikki directly, we do not want any student not to be able to join because of financial constrains. 12. Fresh Start Young Adults: Tuesdays
Our Young Adults ministry, Fresh Start, will meet on Tuesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, on the 3rd floor of the Family Life Center. Come along for some fun, snacks and social time followed by a Bible study. We would love to see you there!

13. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: January 26th
In the Sanctuary, the worship team will be led by Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves with special music from the Sanctuary Choir and Beth Snow, and with the prelude from David & Leah Steeves. In the Gym, the worship team will be led by Mark McAllister.
Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the Gym, of his sermon titled “Anger Management: Inside Out” he says, “As we resume our series on the Sermon on the Mount, attention turns to Matthew 5:17-30 where there is no shortage of powerful insights—ranging from the place of the law to anger and self-control—that can transform our life of discipleship. Some controversial remarks are also found in this part of Matthew 5, such as when Jesus says things like “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven,” or “if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.” But as we carefully analyze these words of Jesus, we will find some amazing and practical wisdom for understanding who we are, and how we can better live for the Kingdom in 2025.”
Rev. Ross Watters will be preaching in the Sanctuary, of his sermon he says, “We live in interesting days, with all of the political unrest, conflict situations, divisive opinions and agendas the world can be a very polarizing place, many people live with fear, uncertainty and a lot of questions. Recognizing that in the time Jesus walked on Earth things were not exactly stable, what can we learn about what it means to be a people of hope and love in the midst of everything that life brings.”
This Sunday we have our Greenhouse youth led Service on the third floor! All those who are grade 6 – 12 are welcome to join for this time of worship together. Come along for fellowship, food, and learning more about how Jesus intimately works in our lives!

Your Deacons want to affirm that BSBC is equipped to provide Pastoral Care. We are grateful for the engagement of Rev. Ross and Pastor Nikki, and we are blessed to have additional support from Rev. Kevin Culberson, sanctuary Ministry Coordinator and the Baptist Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and Doug McAllister, our Benevolent Coordinator and Senior’s Visitation Pastor.

Hospitalizations
• Your pastors will only know of hospitalizations if the church office or individual pastors are contacted directly
• We’d appreciate you notifying the office if you know of the hospitalization of a member of the BSBC family
Critical Incident
• If a pastor is needed in an emergency situation, between Monday to Friday, 8:30 am and 4 pm, please contact the church office
• Outside of office hours, please contact a pastor directly
Bereavement
• Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin will be available to support families at a time of loss, to conduct funeral and committal services
• Contact the church office during office hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm
• Outside of office hours, please contact a pastor directly
• We have provided McAdams, Bishops, and York Funeral Homes with the contact information for both Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin
• If you are not a member of a bereaved family but know of a death within the BSBC family, please contact the church office to make sure your pastors are aware of the need
Parish Nurses
The parish nursing ministry is intended to support and strengthen the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of individuals, families, and the congregation at BSBC. Roz Thompson and Cheryl Gibson, your parish nurses, collaborate with members of the pastoral team promoting health and faith, to facilitate the healing of the body, mind, and spirit. The parish nurses are available to provide prayer and support for physical, mental, and spiritual health challenges.

16. Bereavement
Bruce Hatfield
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bruce D. Hatfield, 72, on January 18, 2025, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Bruce is survived by his beloved wife, Lucie, his siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends. A graduate of Mount Allison University and UNB Law, Bruce practiced law in Fredericton until 2021, earning the Queen’s Counsel designation and recognition for his mentorship, pro bono work, and community service. A man of deep faith, kindness, and humility, Bruce was an avid reader, music lover, sports fan, and political advisor. Visitation will be held at Britton Funeral Home, Hartland, on January 26, from 1–4 p.m., with the funeral service on January 27 at 2 p.m. at Hartland Baptist Church. Donations may be made to Greenwood Cemetery or Theatre New Brunswick Foundation. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8.
