4. Service of Comfort & Hope: Dec 19

Recent losses cast a shadow on familiar celebrations. Your sad feelings are normal as you prepare for Christmas. To support you, I invite you to the Service of Comfort and Hope when candles will be lit in memory of loved ones who are no longer present with you, on Thursday, December 19 at 6:30 pm in the Sanctuary. 13. Starting Local/Going Global Christmas Project

It’s not too late to make a financial gift to our annual Christmas project. Last Sunday, at our Blended Worship service, we didn't announce the giving totals because we were missing the information about electronic giving, and we knew the totals we had were misleading.

Including electronic giving, our Starting Local total is now $5,185.00 – we’re moving closer to meeting the costs for providing Christmas gifts and groceries for our New Life Ministry families and for our guests who attend our monthly Third Sunday Supper, but we will be shopping with faith for their gifts next week knowing that our church family will help us cover those costs!

In addition, $5,445.00 has come in for Going Global which will be sent through our national office, Canadian Baptist Ministries, to support Miqlat Ministries in India.

Thank you to all who have given to this point. We will continue to accept your gifts until the end of December. Designate your gift “Starting Local” if you wish to support those in New Life and Third Sunday Supper or, Going Global, to support Miqlat Ministries in India. If you mark your gift “SLGG” whatever you give will be divided equally between both arms of the project.

Thank You so much.

God is so good.

BSBC Social Action Team and Mission Committee

Come and enjoy music from a live ceilidh band, Fredericton's own Frantically Atlantic, learn some Scottish dances, share in a finger food potluck and bring in the new year with your church family in a time of worship.

We are really looking forward to sharing this time with you!

16. Refugee Update

Since our last update in late September, the BSBC refugee fund has continued to grow. As of December 1, our fund stands at $26,077.44, up from $4,500 from the September update. THANK-YOU! This shows great progress in the past couple of months towards our goal of being able to support this family of six for one year after their immigration to Canada is approved and they arrive in Fredericton.

To support this family for their first year in Canada, we estimated that we will need approximately $45,000, though we recognize that the costs to support a family continue to rise and they are not yet approved to come to Canada. The refugee fund grows through designated donations from our congregation. You can contribute by specifying "Refugee Fund" on your offering envelope or in the comment line of your e-Transfer.

We still have a significant way to go to reach our goal, and we hope to see the paperwork approved soon so this family can begin their new life in Fredericton. Once approved, we will likely receive less than a month's notice of their arrival. Please consider setting up a regular donation to the BSBC refugee fund to help us reach our target.

Due to privacy concerns, the family has requested that their names not be shared publicly, but feel free to have a chat with me if you want to be able to pray for them by name. This family, originally from Syria, is currently living as refugees in Lebanon. We connected with them through relatives here in Fredericton, who were befriended by Rachel Nesbitt, a former member of our congregation.

As everyone has heard on the news, particularly recently, life in the Middle East is volatile and dangerous for many, refugees being amongst those in the least stable situations due to their lack of status in the countries they are in. The family we have applied to sponsor was displaced in early October from the South Lebanon village where they had been living. Rachel helped them find temporary shelter in a ministry centre in North Lebanon through contact with an organization called Horizons International. After rest and a few days of relative stability there, the family was able to find their own accommodations in another village. Rachel remains in contact with the family and with representatives of Horizons International who have been a continued source of support.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me for more information.

Thank you for your continued support!

Martina Verboom

Refugee Liaison, Social Action Team

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and your Social Action Team, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our faithful ‘muffin makers’ for serving in this meaningful way.

December is booked and we are looking for January 2025, and we are in need of 3 dozen muffins each week. Please package 12 individually wrapped muffins in a large, zip-locked bag labeled “Street Ministry.” Be sure to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. The labeled muffins can be placed in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

To sign up, click the link below or call the church office at 506-458-8348, and our admin team will be happy to assist with the online registration. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in His name, and we believe that muffins serve as a wonderful way to bless others in His honor.

19. Study on Pastoral Care

The purpose of this notice is to determine the interest among church participants in attending a study on Pastoral Care, which will take place during the winter months. If you are interested, please phone Janet at the church office (506-458-8348) and indicate your interest. A summary of study topics follows.

Study on Pastoral Care

Christians are called to be godly helpers and provide care and meet the needs of fellow believers. To provide spiritual and emotional support, helpers need knowledge and skills to develop quality helping relationships, which promote healing and wholeness.

This study will focus on two broad topics: Understanding Pastoral Care and Developing Helping Relationships. Topics under Pastoral Care include the following: the definition of pastoral care, its biblical and theological basis, and its aims, objectives, and goals. Under Helping Relationships, the topics include the following: the meaning of helping, motivation and why people behave the way they do, developing empathy and trust, interviewing skills, spiritual formation and using Scripture and prayer in providing care.

This study is open to anyone who is interested in this topic.

Warmly,

Dr. John Stewart

23. Christmas Giving

Dear Church Family,

As we celebrate this season of hope, would you prayerfully consider including a special gift to our church as part of your Christmas giving? Your generosity will help us finish the year in a strong financial position, enabling us to continue being a “Hope-Filled” church, sharing God’s love with our community and beyond.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13

Together, we rejoice in the ways God is at work among us and look forward to His continued blessings in 2025 as we pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.”

How to Give:

  • Place your gift in the offering boxes located on the welcome tables.

  • Drop your gift off at the Church Office.

  • Use the debit machine in the Connections Center.

  • Send an e-transfer to giving@bsbc.nb.ca.

To ensure your gift is receipted for 2024, please:

  • Drop your envelope marked “Christmas Giving Goal” in the offering box during worship on Sunday, Dec. 29.

  • Bring your gift to the Church Office by noon on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

  • Send your e-transfer by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31.

To date, we’ve received $50 toward our Christmas Giving Goal, and we’re encouraged to see how God will work through your support in the weeks ahead.

Thank you for partnering with us to sustain and grow the ministry God has entrusted to us in Fredericton and beyond.

24. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: Dec 8

We’re excited to celebrate the 2nd Sunday in Advent! In the Gym, worship team will be led by Jon Wilton. In the Sanctuary, the worship team will be led by Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves with special music from Victoria Millette and Eden Watters and the Sanctuary Choir.

This Sunday, we will be celebrating the Lord’s table. Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon titled The Light of Advent he says, “This year at the TheStreet we have been emphasizing the season of Advent: Christmas is a day, but Advent lasts for forty days, and it is a time of anticipation and preparation. For much of Christian history, Advent has been an occasion to reflect on both the arrival of the Messiah and the eventual return of the King. Most of us can recognize that one of the hallmarks of Advent is light, and so this weekend we will reflect on the theme of light as a central theme of Christmas and illuminate various ways that light can continue to change our lives.

Reverend Ross Watters will be preaching in the gym on the topic of Surprise. Of his sermon he writes “I'm sure when we think of Christmas and surprise, there are many occasions that spring to mind, whether it is a present we never expected, unexpected guests, surprise party's or otherwise. Surprise is a word we find easy to associate with our experience of the modern-day Christmas season, but is it a word you would use to describe the announcement of Jesus arrival? This Sunday come join us as we look the divine disruption announced by John the Baptist in Mark Chapter 1 and how so often what we expect Jesus to be, and the reality of who He is don't always match up.”

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

• We have provided McAdams, Bishops, and York Funeral Homes with the contact information for both Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin

• If you are not a member of a bereaved family but know of a death within the BSBC family, please contact the church office to make sure your pastors are aware of the need

Parish Nurses

  • The parish nursing ministry is intended to support and strengthen the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of individuals, families, and the congregation at BSBC.
