1. 2020 Financial Stewardship Report

We have tallied up the giving for the full year, and want to share news of Gods faithfulness, despite the circumstances of this 2020 year.

General Operating

We received 94% of the budgeted amount for BSBC's General Operating, a total of $888,442 in giving, just under the budgeted $948,000.  Because our expenses were lower than expected, we hope to end the year in a surplus position.

Building/Capital

We received 100% and more of the amount budgeted for BSBC's Building/Capital Fund, a total of $143,613 in giving, which is $8,613 above the budgeted $135,000. All of the additional building fund amounts will be used to reduce the principal balance of the outstanding mortgage.

I want to thank everyone who participated in God's work in 2020 through your faithful and sacrificial giving. I pray God's continued blessing on you as you continue to support God's work in this place.

Ken Reimer,
Treasurer

2. Facility Use During the Orange Phase

On Jan. 5, when the entire province of New Brunswick returned to the Orange phase of recovery due to the number of COVID-19 cases, BSBC made the difficult decision to return to online worship services and to suspend group/ministry meetings at the church.

Since that time, Pastoral and church staff have received requests from ministries with small numbers of participants to be able to use the church facility for meetings and these have been addressed on a case by case basis.

Public Health NB offers the following guidance:

Public Health NB advises that faith venues can operate under a COVID-19 operational plan. In-person services are limited to 50 participants, or fewer depending upon the size of the facility, with 2 metres of physical distancing. Continuous mask wearing is required. No singing is permitted. Other indoor religious observances, funerals, celebrations of life, marriage ceremonies, receptions and social gatherings of more than 25 people are prohibited.

With that in mind, we ask you to consider the following:

  • Gatherings (other than worship services) at the church facility are limited to 25 participants or less.

  • While it may be possible for small number of people to meet at the church during the Orange phase, all New Brunswickers have been asked to limit contact right now as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19. Please talk with your group to determine if you can maintain contact through other ways of meeting.

  • If you have questions about your group using the church facility to meet, please contact the COVID-19 Committee directly. The Committee will prayerfully and carefully consider your request and make a decision about holding meetings at the church.

To reach this Committee, please contact Mary Tingley at 478-3624 or tingleym29@gmail.com.Thank you,

Deacon Mary Tingley, Chairperson

3. Children's Ministry Videos Return

We invite our kids to tune in next Wednesday (Jan. 20) for the first release for 2021 of our weekly children’s video series — including worship songs, Bible lessons, games and more. Join in the fun and watch at thestreetonline.ca/children. Thanks to our video team for making these possible.

4. Sermon Podcast

Hearing that many enjoy Dr. Keith’s BODcasts, we’re pleased to let you know that these will continue in the year ahead, with an anticipated release near the first of each month.

How to listen

But, new for 2021, you will now be able to access the weekly sermon in a new way. These sermon podcasts, an audio recording you can listen to on your device of choice, are now available on thestreetonline.ca and will soon be available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

5. Bereavment

As a church family, it’s a privilege to stand with one another in times of loss. And so we invite you to consider two families who are experiencing grief in these days.

The Late Gregg Doucette – Please be in prayer for Mavis Doucette, daughters Beckie and Sara and grandsons, Ben, James and Sam as they grieve the loss of Mavis’ husband, Gregg Doucette, who passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 6.  In addition to cherishing his family, Gregg was an owner/operator of the local Premiere Van Lines and AMJ Campbell Van Lines agencies and a national leader in these organizations.  He was a supporter of our Fredericton SUN Committee, helping move people from homelessness to affordable housing, the Habitat for Humanity Restore and Walk So Kids Can Talk (Kid’s Help Phone).  A service to celebrate Gregg’s life was held here at BSBC on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The Late Milton McAllister – Please be in prayer for Doug McAllister and Heather Topple McAllister in the passing of Doug’s brother, Milton, in Moncton on Monday, Jan. 11. Milton was diagnosed with cancer in October 2020. In addition to Doug and Heather, other family members include his wife of 24 years, Sharon Leblanc; two sons Nicholas (Ashley) and Pierce; daughter Kendra; two grandchildren Ethan and Cohen; siblings George Jr. (Rhonda) McAllister, Linda Mosher, Gregg McAllister, Joyce Coleman, Gary (Tina) McAllister, and Laverne McAllister; as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Salisbury Road in Moncton on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 7-9 pm.

Jesus said, Blessed as those who mourn for they will be comforted.

6. Three Bible Study Options for Adults

The Gospel of John | Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Join Pastor Steve virtually for a Bible Study in the Book of John. Dig into John’s gospel which paints a vivid picture of Jesus as the Son of God/Son of Man and helps us understand what it means to live a life that brings the Kingdom to the world in which we live. The study begins on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021.

7. When We Return to Yellow

As we prepare for an eventual move back to yellow and the reinstatement of in-person worship, we would like parents to know that the “Meeting Room” between Pastor Greg and Pastor Steeve’s offices on the gym hallway, is being turned into a ‘family room’ of sorts.

A new family room

We’ll be emptying out that room and fitting it out with rocking chairs, a change table and toddler friendly items to make it an option for parents with young children returning to worship. There will also be the means of you watching the FB Live service from that room.

KidzTown

In addition, we are working toward a ‘soft’ opening (limited enrolment) of KidzTown for K-Gr. 5. More details will be available in the weeks ahead.

Please make ministry to young families a matter of prayer as we seek to be safe and yet minister in these challenging times.

8. Worship this Sunday, Jan. 17

Your church staff look forward to greeting you online on Sunday morning as we gather virtually for worship together. Just visit thestreetonline.ca by 10:25 a.m. and choose from either the contemporary or traditional service – LIVE! Yes, thanks to our innovative tech team, both services will be live each Sunday morning (or you can watch the recording of either sermon for the rest of the week).

Worship leaders

We look forward to Sarah Hoyt and team leading the contemporary service with leadership support from Pastor Steve and Pastor Charles. In the sanctuary, David Steeves and Gloria Tranquilla are joined in musical worship leadership by Pascale Beaulieu. Pastor Greg and Deacon Ron and Sandra McMullin will also be leading. Pastor Greg will offer the children’s time in both services.

Sermon: Stadium Riot

Dr. Keith will be inviting us to return to Acts with a sermon titled: “Stadium Riot” (Acts 19: 21-41). He writes:

Through a chaotic scene in the Arena of Ephesus, the reader of Acts hears an unexpected voice of reason at an opportune moment that prompts us think about the intersection of faith and our contemporary world.  Comparing Ephesus to New York City is apt, and in both places the gospel is apparently not needed. Yet, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the early church community shares the message of good news in challenging circumstances.

In the next installment at Ephesus, a dangerous antagonist arises: Demetrius, a silversmith who produces images and shrines of the goddess Artemis. Known as Diana to the Romans, her image allegedly fell from heaven, and is therefore venerated by the Ephesians in a temple that is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. When the situation in the 24,000 seat stadium of Ephesus is spiraling out of control, a civic administrator speaks sensible words with shades of Gamaliel back in chapter five and Gallio in Corinth.

This episode raises important issues for us at TheStreet, such as the critique of idolatry and confronting controversial elements in our present-day society.

Your church staff and leader look forward to ‘seeing’ you on Sunday!
