1. February AND Ways to Love Fredericton

Long before February arrives on our doorstep, Valentine cards and decorations are appearing all around us. Bringing the theme of LOVE into focus once again.

The Bible says a lot about love. For sure, many go to John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. When we consider God’s love, we can’t separate it from His giving. And, when we think of the role believers are to play in sharing God’s love – we often think of giving.

So, this February, your Social Action Team is suggesting some ways you can love/give in support of our church family who minister on a weekly basis to the homeless in our city. We invite you to be partners in their work by loving/giving to provide practical relief in the coldest part of the year.

If you are someone who likes to provide practical help with supplies, here’s what we’d suggest:

  • Bottled Water: We are wanting to build up our stock of bottled water which is a regular part of this ministry all through the year. We welcome you to purchase personal sized bottled water and bring it to the Connections Center and we’ll move it to our stock room for use as the weeks go on.

  • Socks: This is a real need for folks who are not housed. A clean, dry pair of socks helps overall wellbeing. We would be grateful for new socks for both men and for women. Warm and thick socks that pull up on the leg (not athletic socks). Should you be able to help in this way, please leave your gifts in the white laundry baskets in the Connections Center.

  • Financial Gifts are always welcome. As this ministry goes forward there are times when specific items need to be purchased. Some of these items we are happy to purchase based on the experience of our Street Level Team. If you are able to help in this way, please be sure to identify your gift for “Street Ministry”.

Thank you for considering if one of these options may be your way of partnering with our Street Level ministry team and be an expression of love in the name of our God who gives.

Your Social Action Team

2. February Senior’s Luncheon

Attention ‘chronologically gifted’ members of the BSBC family. You are invited to make your reservation (and maybe one for a friend) for our February Senior’s Luncheon. Usually held on the third Monday of the month, February’s luncheon will be THIS Monday, Feb. 13 at noon. This change is made due to the following Monday being part of the February long weekend.

We hope that we won’t get stormed out and will have opportunity for a ‘homemade soup and apple pie’ lunch with special guest, Steve Patterson, from 12 Neighbours Tiny Home Ministry. Steve will be bringing along his guitar to bless us in song and give us the latest update on his ministry.

3. Hands-In Elementary Girls Ministry Valentine Event

Calling all elementary school girls! Come have some Valentine's Day fun on February 11th from 10:00am to noon in KidzTown! We would love to have you join us!

4. Sports Friends Ministry Update

A Fruitful Time Out West

The 10 days spent in the Surrey/Vancouver area were definitely a blessing.

First off, being able to meet and listen to at least a hundred people during the missions conference brought much joy to our SIM Canada team, but at the same time some sadness since it was the last edition of this conference that first started in 1983.

It made me wonder what the future holds for the mission agencies and Bible schools that are always eager to speak, listen and pray with candidates. In the same breath, it made me reflect on what I could be doing to promote missions in the Atlantic, what is the role of our Fredericton local churches, etc. Any ideas?

Regarding my workshop, 20-some people from 8-10 different churches came and participated. It was an interactive 60-minutes where connections were made. Please pray that I will be diligent in fostering the relationships that were birthed then. Thanks for your prayers!

From the many meetings that I had during the week, I was most blessed by the honesty of one pastor, Connor, who openly confessed that their church sucks at evangelism, yet it is a church of 5,000+ members, spread out on 3 campuses.

Just imagine if this church would start shifting from having a more inward vision to a radical, bold outward vision, where everything that is done during the week, points to fulfilling the last words of Jesus (go and make disciples), and prioritize the equipping of his congregants and to go out with faith where the lost are.

Connor is eager to keep the conversation going and figure out how Sports Friends could be a part of their outreach plan. Will you pray for him and for his church?

As a result of such meetings, it's easy to see that the work of Sports Friends in Canada will only increase, which is exciting and also impossible for me to do alone. Please pray that God will indeed bring teammates alongside me.

Lastly, if God is sparking an interest in all of this and in what He is calling me to do here in Canada and you sense that joining me is the right thing to do, whether it is through prayer or through financial participation, don't hesitate to email me at charles.millette@sim.org, so we can meet and chat!

In Him, by His Grace and for His Glory among all Nations!

Charles

5. Third Sunday Supper Needs You

Third Sunday Supper is a monthly ministry focusing on our "downtown" friends. What a great way to show the love of Jesus, with a home cooked meal, some good conversation — including the Word brought by Pastor Ross, music and a safe and comfortable atmosphere.

My prayer is that we will have enough volunteers to prepare a meal, to fill in the months of April to December. Would you consider helping? There is a $100 stipend available, you just have to turn your receipts into the office.

Please call or email me if you have any questions or your heart leads you to want to help with this ministry.

Blessings,

Judy Thompson

6. Update: The Bible Project

Unfortunately, The Bible Project class, planned to be launched this Sunday in the Sunday School hour will not be offered. Stay tuned for more updates.

7. Bereavement

Our sympathy and prayer for comfort for the family of the Late Sadie Fletcher on Sunday, February 5 at her home at the age of 95 years of age. Sadie was a member of Brunswick Street Baptist Church.

Sadie was a wonderful homemaker, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend, who enjoyed knitting, reading, puzzling, playing games (which she often won), and shopping and eating out at every given opportunity. She was admired for her “strength” of character in good times and bad her kindness and even in her later years, always remembered Birthdays, Anniversaries etc., and was “generous” beyond words to her family and friends; she will be remembered as one who never shook hands but preferred “HUGS”. She has left a legacy of five generations of family who knew, loved and admired her, and being a woman of faith journeys onward to Heaven to join her loved ones that have gone on before her. God Bless You and Keep You Mother dearest.

There will be a Memorial Service at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Roger Graham officiating.

The full obituary can be found at: https://yorkfh.com/tribute/details/16562/Sadie-Fletcher/obituary.html#tribute-start

8. A Very Special Guest: Rev. Dr. Terry Atkinson

On Sunday, February 12, we’ll have a very special guest, former BSBC Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Terry Atkinson.

We congratulate Dr. Terry on his recent appointment as Interim Executive Minister (part time) of our denomination, Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada.

It is in this capacity that Dr. Terry and Brenda join us on the 12th. He will be here to bring greetings from our denominational office and to give us a brief update on our CBAC family during this time of transition.

After the service Dr. Terry will be available in the Family Room for refreshments and a Q&A time. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join him for a 20-30 minute time of sharing concerns or asking questions about the CBAC or just to learn about its current situation in more detail.

For some, Dr. Terry will be a new face. To learn more about him and his ministry visit: https://baptist-atlantic.ca/our-convention/our-staff/terry-atkinson/

9. Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada

As we anticipate the Feb. 12 visit of the Interim Executive Minister of our denomination, Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada (CBAC), we thought some might like a bit of background about what it means for the BSBC family to be part of the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada family.

CBAC is a ministry partnership of more than 450 Canadian Baptist churches (of which BSBC is one!) and 21 Associations in the Atlantic Provinces. Our role is to resource our pastors, churches, and people, and to facilitate shared mission on behalf of our churches.

THE PURPOSE OF CBAC is being and making disciples of Jesus Christ who are integrated into the life and ministry of healthy growing churches, committed to fulfilling the Great Commission and the doing of God’s will on earth.

THE VISION OF CBAC: We are joining God in our neighbourhoods.

CBAC recognizes that God is already at work around us in our neighbourhoods and communities. It’s up to us to open our eyes and partner with God. This CBAC vision invites and challenges churches (like ours!) to get to know their neighbours and find new ways to share the Good News.

“We know we can’t hesitate in this cultural moment to act decisively and conscientiously to be followers of Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, working to see transformation in the lives of people in our neighbourhoods. We hope you will discover where God is at work around you and join Him in changing the fabric of our Atlantic Canadian landscape. Let’s join Him in our neighbourhoods.”

Is CBAC new to you? In anticipation of Dr. Terry Atkinson’s Feb. 12 time with us, we encourage you to explore the CBAC website and learn more about the exciting ways in which the CBAC is positioned to help us “join God in our neighbourhood.”

11. Proposed Change to the BSBC Constitution

Your Board of Deacons is requesting the congregation’s approval to the make a change to the section of the Constitution which defines Pastoral Reviews. Please review the details below.

Original Article From the Constitution

5.1.8 The Board of Deacons shall be responsible for the evaluation of the ministry of each member of the Pastoral Staff. A formal review involving consultation with other Church members will be carried out at least once every two years. The Board of Deacons will report to the Church at the Annual Business Meeting on any reviews carried out since the previous Annual Business Meeting.

The Proposed Revision

5.1.8 The Board of Deacons shall be responsible for the evaluation of the ministry of each member of the Pastoral Staff. A formal review involving consultation with other Church members will be carried out at least once every two years. The Board of Deacons will report to the Church at the Spring Business Meeting on any reviews carried out since the previous Spring Business Meeting.

Reason for the Request

The extensive nature of the review process makes it necessary to begin in December and difficult to complete by the January meeting of the Board of Deacons:

  • Requesting letters from members of the family and the review of same

  • Each individual deacon fills out an extensive evaluation of the pastor under consideration with the results of the 16 evaluations being consolidated and reviewed

  • The pastor under review completes a self-evaluation as does the Lead Pastor – then a meeting is undertaken for the two to compare evaluations – outcomes to be shared with the Pastoral Relations Committee for review

  • The Review Committee meets with the pastor under review to gain insights about ministry satisfaction and overall engagement in church life

  • The Review Committee then consolidates all material, summates findings, writes a final report

  • The report has to be presented at Board of Deacons meeting for review, edit and/or acceptance

  • The Review Committee meet with the Pastor under review and share the written report asking for the pastor’s signature to sign off on the findings

  • The written report is presented to the congregation

In order for all these steps to be completed for presentation at the February Annual Business Meeting, the process ends up taking place at the busiest time of the year for our pastors and deacons (through the month of December into early January)

For this reason, the Board is requesting the proposed change to the Constitution with the intention that the following motion be presented for your consideration at the February 2023 Annual Business Meeting:

Moved that section 5.1.8 of the Brunswick Street Baptist Church Constitution be changed to reflect that the Board of Deacons will now be responsible for presenting Pastoral Reviews at the Spring Business Meeting instead of the Annual Business Meeting.

Thank you for your consideration,

Your Board of Deacons

12. Opportunity to Provide a Meal

I’m writing to invite you to consider providing a meal for a BSBC husband and wife, living on their own, but experiencing serious health challenges. In visiting with them to explore how their church family can support them in these challenging days for them, I asked about meals and they said that such help would be a blessing.

I would like to create a schedule of individuals who would provide one meal a week for this couple. It might be helpful if those providing the meal planned for there to be leftovers.

Click the link below to identify the week you would provide a meal. You would contact the couple the first of that week and arrange the day for the meal delivery. If you can provide the meal but aren’t able to deliver – no problem – we’ll get it delivered for you. Contact information will be provided after sign-up using the link below.

Thank you for considering such a practical way to bear another’s burdens.

Pastor Greg

13. Sunday’s Worship Gatherings

The gym worship service will be under the musical leadership of Greg Keezer and team. In the sanctuary the service will feature musical leadership of a Ladies’ Trio and the Sanctuary Choir.

Both services will include greetings and updates on happenings in our denomination – Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada – provided by our former Senior Pastor, now Interim Executive Minister, Dr. Terry Atkinson.

Pastor Greg will be preaching in the gym, continuing the series: Things Jesus DIDN’T SAY, with this week’s focus being, “You Can Be Forgiven But You Don’t Have to Forgive.”

In the Sanctuary, Dr. Keith will continue in his series in the gospel of Mark. This week we consider Mark 1:21-34 in a sermon entitled “Angels and Demons”. This is what he shares about this week’s offering:

“What are you going to do when you grow up?” The first four disciples in Mark chapter 1 would have an unforeseen answer to that question, and they would have to say something like: go to work every day in the fishing industry, but then respond to a seemingly random call from an itinerant rabbi to leave everything and follow him! Having responded to the call of Jesus—with echoes of the call of Abraham way back in Genesis 12—the first disciples witness two kinds of events as this remarkable chapter continues. First, there are confrontations with the demonic realm, as someone with an unclean spirit in the synagogue cries out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Second, after the encounter in the synagogue the disciples also witness some spectacular healings, including Peter’s mother-in-law. While evil spirits and physical healings might not be in the purview of much of the contemporary Canadian church right now, we will highlight a number of points of possible application as we move forward in this new year.

Whether in-person or online, we hope that you will join us for our worship services this coming Sunday morning, February 12.

15. Please Pick Up Your Dishes

The main kitchen counter has been ‘shortened’ by the great stash of dishes left from church events. These orphaned dishes would love to be reclaimed by their owners as the space is really valuable especially during Third Sunday Supper and Senior’s Luncheon preparation and service.

Please have a look and see what might be yours. The end of February, we’ll be finding new homes for whatever is left. THANK YOU!
