1. The Season of Lent & Addition of ‘Soaking Time’ to Our Services

Today, Wednesday, Feb. 22, is Ash Wednesday. Christians around the world are embarking on the observance of the ‘season’ of Lent — taking us from today through to Easter Sunday. A time to look inward and to consider our relationship with Christ. A time to engage in spiritual ‘house cleaning.’

Below you will find an extensive article that will give you a wonderful introduction to Lent and provide practical ways you can make your journey to Easter Sunday more personal and meaningful. I hope you’ll take some time and give it a read.

During Lent 2023, your pastors are inviting you to engage in a new element of worship — a post-sermon ‘soaking time.’ Starting this Sunday and through to the end of March, we’ll give you time, following the sermon, to prayerfully spend time with God, consider what you’ve heard and allow for you to commune with the Spirit. During this time, on the screens, we’ll provide questions or quotes that we hope will be helpful in guiding your ‘soaking time’. The ‘soaking time’ will end with you being led in prayer and then the service will continue.

In addition, your pastors and church leaders will be available at the front of each worship centre should you like someone to pray with you or to discuss something you’re thinking about or a question that has come to you.

So often, as pastors we feel that the sermon ends and we move directly into the next element of worship which can distract from that ‘still, small voice’ we may have heard during the sermon. This practice for Lent offers a unique opportunity to change that for five weeks.

Thank you for trusting us to lead you through something new for Lent 2023. Be sure that it is our prayer that the Spirit of God will take us to new places of understanding and to experience God’s glory.

In addition to the article on Ash Wednesday and Lent, below you will find a second article that more fully explains this act of worship that you can also use on your own, with your small group or family/friends.

May our journey to Easter be unlike any other to the glory of the risen Christ who makes all things new!

Pastor Greg

2. Tonight’s Annual Meeting/Supper/Kids Program

The church family is asked to gather TONIGHT, Wednesday, Feb. 22 for the Annual Congregational Meeting (6:30 p.m.) preceded by pizza supper (5:15 p.m.). Report booklets for the year 2022 are available from the church office or at tonight’s meeting. Also at 6:15 p.m., a children’s program is being offered for infants-age 4 (Preschool Area) and Kindergarten to Grade 5 (KidzTown). If you would like to attend the meeting on Zoom please contact the church office (receptionist@bsbc.nb.ca) to receive the link.

3. New Roles for Valued Team Members

Starting Monday, March 6, Janet Mitchell and Naomi Phillips will have new roles in a reorganization of our administrative plan to better meet the needs of the pastors and congregation in 2023. With an office switch, Janet will become our Office Administrator (40 hours/week) and Naomi our Ministry Administrator (20 hours/week) and Bookkeeper (20 hours/week). Our goal was to create positions that are built around the individual giftedness of each to enable them have the greatest measure of satisfaction in their ministry.

Janet will continue working directly with our church family and providing administrative support on request as well as facilitating the work of our Benevolent, Counseling Center and Prayer Ministries.

Naomi will be attending pastoral staff meetings, to provide administrative support for ministry initiatives and events which will help relieve the pastors of such details and ensure that all church staff are working with a to-the-minute calendar schedule. She will also maintain our contact database and be responsible for seasonal publication distribution. She continues the other half of her weekly hours as our Bookkeeper.

We are so grateful to Janet and Naomi for their willingness to explore this new approach and work together to develop both roles within the overall staff team. In the next year, we will be sitting down every three months to evaluate, problem solve and continue to define these roles.

Please pray for Janet, Naomi, your pastors and the Personnel Committee of your Board of Management as we work toward this new paradigm.

Janet Trail, Personnel Committee
Ron Smith, Chair, Board of Management
Greg Geldart, Lead Pastor

4. March/April Income Tax Clinics Return to BSBC

Income Taxes – Still a growing Mission Field – Are you able to help?

Just over fourteen years ago, in 2009, thanks to her vision and passion to serve the downtown community, Pastor Nancy Murphy took the initiative to have Brunswick Street Baptist Church become involved in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). The CVITP has become a staple at BSBC during the months of March and April and in-fact, we now do tax returns throughout the year. This is a free service to low- and modest-income earners, including students and newcomers to Canada.

BSBC will be holding tax clinics in again in the gym on Tuesday afternoons during the months of March and April, between 1 and 5 pm. We need people who can help ANY TIME between 12:30 pm and 5 pm on Tuesday afternoons. You do not have to be available every Tuesday.

We can use people who are willing to greet clients and help them fill out a simple form. NO TAX EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. If you are interested in learning how to help people with their taxes, there is training available, and we will help get you trained.

We have COVID safety protocols in place and we provide the necessary masks, etc. as needed.

If you can help, please call the office at 506-458-8348 or contact us directly.

Finally, if you or someone you know could benefit from this free service, we will be happy to help.

Sincerely,

Ron Smith

5. Two New Adult Sunday School Classes Start February 26

Adults! Great news! Two new adult Sunday School classes will begin THIS coming Sunday, Feb. 26 at 9:30 a.m.

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (5 Sundays)
Led by Scott Myles/Family Room (1st Floor, Family Life Center)

“As someone all too familiar with ‘hurry sickness,’ I desperately needed this study.”―Scott Harrison, New York Times best-selling author of Thirst

“Who am I becoming?”

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was―and continues to be―the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

Within this 5-part video study, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Portraits of Jesus (Multi Week)
Led by Dwight Dunfield/The Under-the-Sea Room (Preschool Suite, 1st Floor, Family Life Center)

In order to be imitators of God, we need to know Him through Jesus. We will look at different characteristics of Jesus and work towards being more like Him.

6. Bereavement

Please be in prayer for Don and Dawn Greer given the passing of Dawn’s mother, Lillian Maude Weaver at the Chalmer’s Hospital on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 85 years of age.

Born in Newcastle, NB, she was the daughter of the late Eldon and Annie (Campbell) Curtis. She was a retired Operations Officer for Scotia Bank for 35 years and a member of the Nashwaaksis Baptist Church. Besides her husband Floyd, she is survived by her daughter, Dawn Greer (Donald) of New Maryland; her sister, Marion Arbeau of Grand Bay- Westfield and her brother Reverend Ronald Curtis of Saint John. May the peace Jesus promised those who mourn be real in the lives of Lillian’s family.

7. February AND Ways to Love Fredericton

Long before February arrives on our doorstep, Valentine cards and decorations are appearing all around us. Bringing the theme of LOVE into focus once again.

The Bible says a lot about love. For sure, many go to John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. When we consider God’s love, we can’t separate it from His giving. And, when we think of the role believers are to play in sharing God’s love – we often think of giving.

So, this February, your Social Action Team is suggesting some ways you can love/give in support of our church family who minister on a weekly basis to the homeless in our city. We invite you to be partners in their work by loving/giving to provide practical relief in the coldest part of the year.

If you are someone who likes to provide practical help with supplies, here’s what we’d suggest:

  • Bottled Water: We are wanting to build up our stock of bottled water which is a regular part of this ministry all through the year. We welcome you to purchase personal sized bottled water and bring it to the Connections Center and we’ll move it to our stock room for use as the weeks go on.

  • Socks: This is a real need for folks who are not housed. A clean, dry pair of socks helps overall wellbeing. We would be grateful for new socks for both men and for women. Warm and thick socks that pull up on the leg (not athletic socks). Should you be able to help in this way, please leave your gifts in the white laundry baskets in the Connections Center.

  • Financial Gifts are always welcome. As this ministry goes forward there are times when specific items need to be purchased. Some of these items we are happy to purchase based on the experience of our Street Level Team. If you are able to help in this way, please be sure to identify your gift for “Street Ministry”.

Thank you for considering if one of these options may be your way of partnering with our Street Level ministry team and be an expression of love in the name of our God who gives.

Your Social Action Team

8. Third Sunday Supper Needs You

Third Sunday Supper is a monthly ministry focusing on our downtown friends. What a great way to show the love of Jesus, with a home cooked meal, some good conversation — including the Word brought by Pastor Ross, music and a safe and comfortable atmosphere.

My prayer is that we will have enough volunteers to prepare a meal, to fill in the months of April to December. Would you consider helping? There is a $100 stipend available, you just have to turn your receipts into the office.

Please call or email me if you have any questions or your heart leads you to want to help with this ministry.

Blessings,

Judy Thompson

9. Proposed Change to the BSBC Constitution

Your Board of Deacons is requesting the congregation’s approval to the make a change to the section of the Constitution which defines Pastoral Reviews. Please review the details below.

Original Article From the Constitution

5.1.8 The Board of Deacons shall be responsible for the evaluation of the ministry of each member of the Pastoral Staff. A formal review involving consultation with other Church members will be carried out at least once every two years. The Board of Deacons will report to the Church at the Annual Business Meeting on any reviews carried out since the previous Annual Business Meeting.

The Proposed Revision

5.1.8 The Board of Deacons shall be responsible for the evaluation of the ministry of each member of the Pastoral Staff. A formal review involving consultation with other Church members will be carried out at least once every two years. The Board of Deacons will report to the Church at the Spring Business Meeting on any reviews carried out since the previous Spring Business Meeting.

Reason for the Request

The extensive nature of the review process makes it necessary to begin in December and difficult to complete by the January meeting of the Board of Deacons:

  • Requesting letters from members of the family and the review of same

  • Each individual deacon fills out an extensive evaluation of the pastor under consideration with the results of the 16 evaluations being consolidated and reviewed

  • The pastor under review completes a self-evaluation as does the Lead Pastor – then a meeting is undertaken for the two to compare evaluations – outcomes to be shared with the Pastoral Relations Committee for review

  • The Review Committee meets with the pastor under review to gain insights about ministry satisfaction and overall engagement in church life

  • The Review Committee then consolidates all material, summates findings, writes a final report

  • The report has to be presented at Board of Deacons meeting for review, edit and/or acceptance

  • The Review Committee meet with the Pastor under review and share the written report asking for the pastor’s signature to sign off on the findings

  • The written report is presented to the congregation

In order for all these steps to be completed for presentation at the February Annual Business Meeting, the process ends up taking place at the busiest time of the year for our pastors and deacons (through the month of December into early January)

For this reason, the Board is requesting the proposed change to the Constitution with the intention that the following motion be presented for your consideration at the February 2023 Annual Business Meeting:

Moved that section 5.1.8 of the Brunswick Street Baptist Church Constitution be changed to reflect that the Board of Deacons will now be responsible for presenting Pastoral Reviews at the Spring Business Meeting instead of the Annual Business Meeting.

Thank you for your consideration,

Your Board of Deacons

10. 2023 Ladies’ Banquet

Well, during the winter you can use a little ‘pick-me-up’ and that’s why on Saturday, March 18, we will be offering our 2023 Ladies’ Banquet: A Night At the Oscars. The men of the church will be having fun hosting the ladies in an evening of fine food and even finer fun.

Ladies, this is a great night to introduce your friends to our church family. Create your own ‘look’ for your arrival photo on our red carpet.

Tickets for the event will be $10 per person and will be on sale at the Connections Center starting Sunday following the services. More details to come.

Pastor Greg

PS – My apologies for the tickets not being available on the 19th. They will be ready for this coming Sunday. Pastor Greg

11. Sunday’s Worship Gatherings

The gym worship service will be under the musical leadership of Sarah Hoyt and Mark McAllister. In the sanctuary the service will feature musical leadership of the Sanctuary Choir and soloist, Pascale Butt.

Pastor Greg will be preaching in the sanctuary, continuing the series: Things Jesus DIDN’T SAY, with this week’s focus being, “You’ll Be Forgiven but You Don’t Have to Forgive.”

In the Sanctuary, Dr. Keith will continue in his series in the gospel of Mark. This week we consider Mark 1:21-34 in a sermon entitled “Angels and Demons”. This is what he shares about this week’s offering:

“What are you going to do when you grow up?” The first four disciples in Mark chapter 1 would have an unforeseen answer to that question, and they would have to say something like: go to work every day in the fishing industry, but then respond to a seemingly random call from an itinerant rabbi to leave everything and follow him! Having responded to the call of Jesus—with echoes of the call of Abraham way back in Genesis 12—the first disciples witness two kinds of events as this remarkable chapter continues. First, there are confrontations with the demonic realm, as someone with an unclean spirit in the synagogue cries out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Second, after the encounter in the synagogue the disciples also witness some spectacular healings, including Peter’s mother-in-law. While evil spirits and physical healings might not be in the purview of much of the contemporary Canadian church right now, we will highlight a number of points of possible application as we move forward in this new year.

Whether in-person or online, we hope that you will join us for our worship services this coming Sunday morning, February 26.

12. Our Speaker for Sunday, March 5

In both services on Sunday, March 5, we’ll welcome our own Kevin Culberson to our pulpit. Kevin serves as the Baptist Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and Oromocto Public Hospital.

We’ve invited him to share about this ministry and how we can help him expand his reach.

14. Last Call: Please Pick Up Your Dishes

The main kitchen counter has been ‘shortened’ by the great stash of dishes left from church events. These orphaned dishes would love to be reclaimed by their owners as the space is really valuable especially during Third Sunday Supper and Senior’s Luncheon preparation and service.

Please have a look and see what might be yours. The end of February, we’ll be finding new homes for whatever is left. THANK YOU!
