1. Annual Business Meeting: February 21

Our Moderator, Dr. Calvin Smith, calls for the Brunswick Street Baptist Church congregation to attend our Annual Business Meeting on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 6:45 pm (Storm Date: Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 6:45 pm). This is an important event which highlights our ministries, opportunities to serve, and our financial direction for 2024. We encourage in-person attendance as our required quorum is 75 members.

Pizza Potluck

Please join us in the gym at 5:30 pm for a pizza potluck. We will provide the pizza (Meat, Hawaiian, Veggie, Pepperoni or Cheese) and ask, if you are able, to bring a simple dessert or side salad to share. At 6:30 pm, following our potluck, we will travel from the gym to the sanctuary to prepare for the start of our Annual Business Meeting at 6:45 pm. If you have any food intolerances or questions about the Pizza Potluck, please contact Anna Marie Colpitts or the church office at 506-458-8348.

Childcare

We will be providing childcare for those members in attendance with children from infant to age 18 from 6:30 pm to the end of the Business meeting. Our usual programs will open for all children and youth in attendance. These programs include Youth Bible study for youth from Grade 5 to 12, Hands-In Girls Ministry for girls from Kindergarten to Grade 5, Scouts for boys from Kindergarten to Grade 5, as well as our preschool ministry. If you have any questions about these programs or the childcare, please contact Pastor Nikki or the church office at 506-458-8348.

2. 2023 Annual Report

Each year we compile a booklet that contains reports from all full time and part time staff; all boards, committees, teams; the report of the nominating committee who have recruited volunteers to serve in all aspects of church life; the financial report for the previous year and the budget proposal for the upcoming year; the membership lists and the adherents list. As you can tell, it’s a big job and we’re grateful to Dale Bray, Brian McEwing, Gloria Tranquilla, Dwight Colwell and Naomi Phillips who have edited and compiled these individual submissions together into one cohesive booklet.

The 2023 Annual Report is available from the church office during the week and in the sanctuary and gym foyers on Sundays.

To have a printed copy mailed to you, please contact the church office at 506-458-8348. Please note that we cannot guarantee delivery before the Annual Business Meeting on February 21, 2024.

To have an electronic copy of the report booklet, please email the church office at receptionist@bsbc.nb.ca.

3. 2023 Income Tax Receipts Are Ready!

This message is applicable to all those who made donations to Brunswick Street Baptist Church in 2023. If you have not already received your 2023 Income Tax Receipt, please contact Deborah VanSlyke to make arrangements for pick up or ask her to send them out by Canada Post.

Deborah VanSlyke

Financial Secretary

4. Deacons’ Update

The Board of Deacons is made up of volunteer church members. The intention is to represent a diverse cross-section of the church so there can be contacts with all in the church family. The Board values input from the church family. This could be communication of suggestions, concerns, questions, or anything else that members of the church want to communicate to the Board can be done by conversation with board members or letters written to the Board.

In my experience on the Board, letters have been received for a variety of reasons including questions, concerns, and/or suggestions about facilities, staff, service format, hymnals, communion elements, programs offered and not offered, just to name a few. These items are presented at a board meeting, discussed, often prayed about, and a reply through conversation or letter is offered.

The Board of Deacons wants the church family to know that they welcome input and will respond after it is presented to and discussed at a board meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Dan Wilton, Chair

Board of Deacons

5. Administrative and Social Media Assistant Opportunity

6. Let’s Celebrate Our Ministries

In 2024, we would like to start celebrating all of the good things that have happened or are happening or will be happening at Brunswick Street Baptist Church (BSBC).

We invite you to submit a paragraph (or two!) of the good things that are being accomplished (please include a photograph if you have one!) through each of the programs and events that happen at BSBC.

Please email the information on your group, ministry, or event to the church office, along with a couple of photos, to naomi.phillips@bsbc.nb.ca. We will compile these good news stories for a presentation on March 31 which is Easter Sunday.

7. Mandarin Baptisms

Praise the Lord! We thank God for brother Keqin Chen and Sister Kaili Liu who were baptised on February 18, 2024. Congratulations to them. May our Lord bless and lead their lives.

Thanks,

Changbin Tian, Pastor to the Chinese Congregation

8. Thank You from the Steeves Family

Dear Brunswick Steet Family,

Thank you to the Sanctuary Choir, Church Staff and congregation of Brunswick Street Baptist Church for your prayers and many acts of kindness during our recent bereavement. Your support and help meant so much to us at the time of my mother’s passing.

Sincerely,

David Steeves and the family of the late Ruth Steeves

9. Thank You from D. Slipp

Dear BSBC Family,

I offer in prayer, my heartfelt thanks to the Brunswick St. Church family for being a major part of my Christian life and growth. I’m joining a new church family in my community of Scotch Settlement and look forward to serving Jesus here in the church and in the community.

Jesus is the name above all names but each name at BSBC is important to me. Pastor Fred Smith baptized me there at age 40 in 1992, so I encourage seekers of any age to commit to Jesus. He blesses life more abundantly than imaginable. So many lifelong friends continue to be a blessing of encouragement to me. 32 years since then have flown by - of friendship, prayer groups, book studies, pastoral teachings and following Jesus - they have all strengthened me.

I love the multi generational family of Brunswick St. from junior church to seniors. The family of God is eternal. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

In His Presence,

Dick Slipp

10. BSBC Missions Partners

Dear BSBC family,

Once more, you boldly answered God's call to meet a need! Solomon often speaks about finances and generosity, so here is a wonderful truth about liberality: “The world of the generous gets larger and larger.” (Proverbs 11:24a MSG).

The love offered by so many of you goes so far beyond Fredericton. It goes all the way to the other side of the world.

Lastly, on behalf of our missions partners ...

Cảm ơn! Salamat! Asante! Thank you!

Your BSBC Missions Committee

17. Community Engagement & Volunteer Opportunities

1. Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinic

The tax season will be upon us once again and BSBC will be holding free income tax clinics under the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). Over 700 returns for low-income earners, students, and new immigrants were completed last year.

We really do need more volunteers! We need people who can help ANY TIME between 12:30 and 5:00 pm on Tuesday afternoons. You do not have to be available every Tuesday. We can use people who are willing to greet clients and help them fill out a simple form. NO TAX EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

BSBC holds tax clinics on Tuesday afternoons between 1:00 and 5:00 pm during the months of March and April. This is a free service to low- and modest-income earners, including students and newcomers to Canada.

If you are interested in learning how to help people with their taxes, there is training available, and we will help get you trained. We have COVID safety protocols in place and we provide the necessary masks, etc. as needed.

If you can help, please call the church office at 506-458-8348 or contact us directly.

Finally, if you or someone you know could benefit from this free service, we will be happy to help.

Sincerely,

Ron Smith

2.  Muffin Ministry

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way.

Our schedule is now open for 2024. We still require 3 dozen muffins per week. Please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below to sign up to serve in this way or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for him.

3. Third Sunday Supper

Our Third Sunday Supper (TSS) ministry is going strong with up to 50 guests some Sundays. This is an incredible ministry where we can meet folks in a relaxing and loving atmosphere, while gently planting seeds of faith.

In order to continue with this important work, we are looking for anyone – friends, family, or group – that would volunteer to prepare a meal for our TSS guests in May 2024. All other months are covered. Our guests are not fussy and are so appreciative of every meal served. A $150.00 stipend is available to help cover the cost of expenses.

If you have any questions or to volunteer your group, please contact Judy Thompson at 506-238-9903 or email judypaul1088@gmail.com.

20. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: February 25

The gym worship service will be under the musical leadership of Jon Wilton and friends. In the sanctuary, the worship service will under the musical leadership of Gloria Tranquilla and David Steeves with special music by David Steeves and the Sanctuary Choir.

Pastor Ross will be preaching the fifth sermon in his Growing Young series, in the gym. Dr. Keith will be preaching in the sanctuary. Of his sermon, Two Questions, he writes, “Last week with the feeding of the 5000 in Mark chapter 6 we noticed that the larger story is organized with a deliberate contrast: immediately before the episode where a multitude is given a banquet, we read about a party in Herod’s palace, replete with cunning duplicity. But the vast crowd on the hillside were invited to a radically different kind of feast, and in our study, we had occasion to reflect on how the Lord Jesus can meet our deepest needs. This week we continue in chapter 8 where a pair of episodes revolve around vitally important questions. In the first episode there seems to be a two-stage process of illumination when Jesus asks a blind person, “Do you see anything?” In the second episode, Jesus takes his disciples to Caesarea Phillipi, and with an idolatrous landscape in the background he asks his disciples “Who do people say that I am?” Both questions, as we suggest this morning, are very relevant for all of us at TheStreet who are seeking to live for Jesus in new and exciting ways.”

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning. Both services start at 10:30 am.
