1. Easter Letter from the Pastor’s Office
Dear Family,
A real theme for our family at Brunswick Street Baptist Church this year has been hope. As well as being the core verse for the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada’s vision, a verse I have also cited often this last year has been Romans 15:13, which is:
‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace
as you trust in him, so that you may overflow
with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’
I continue to find myself captivated by this verse. Recently, I have found myself reflecting on the word ‘overflow’. It’s interesting to me how the preface ‘over’ is so often associated with difficulties we face in life. Overwhelmed, overworked, overburdened, overtired, overstimulated, overloaded, overthinking… what if as followers of Jesus in a time where people can feel overcome with all the ‘overs’ of life, what if we could live in a place of ‘overflow’?
As we continue to move towards Easter, this time of great hope, words from Max Lucado’s book ‘Unshakable Hope: Building Our Lives on the Promises of God’ have been sticking with me.
“We are building our lives on the promises of God. Because his Word is unbreakable, our hope is unshakable. We do not stand on the problems of life or the pain in life. We stand on the great and precious promises of God.” “The question is not, will God keep his promises, but, will we build our lives upon them?”
God has so much to say about hope and our identity. Hope of a life in all its fullness, of the presence of our God with us by the power of the Holy Spirit, day by day, plans to give us a hope and a future. We are given a new identity, adopted into His family, we have our sin wiped clean and are given a way back to God! In fact, as we are told in John 6:40:
"For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
Everyone. God’s will is for everyone. We are left with an amazing and enduring hope in all circumstances for all people. As followers of Jesus, we have a powerful, yet personal God who not only walks with us all the days of our lives but can even carry us through the valley of the shadow of death. God being with us in every moment of life through the Holy Spirit within us is the living hope that is the greatest gift we could ever receive! As Max Lucado also shares:
“Because Jesus is human, he understands you.
Because he is divine, he can help you.
He is uniquely positioned to carry us home.”
Jesus’ love and grace in our life is enough! Enough for you, yesterday, today and forever. He understands us, loves us, is with us and for us. His grace is enough in every circumstance, the question is, do we truly believe this and live like it is true? Do we see our identity and value so entangled in our belonging to the family of God, or does our own opinion of self and perspective on hope still get in the way? Jesus even asks this very kind of question in the Gospel of John after declaring His power where he says in John 11:25 – 26:
"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.
Do you believe this?'"
This commitment of God for us, despite our flaws and failures, our doubts and insecurities, our sin and living of life in the ‘overs’ is God’s grace given to us. God’s gift to us is not only life eternal, but His very presence with us now. Richard Rohr, the Catholic Priest, wrote a beautiful reflection on grace that I would like to share a section of, where he writes:
“The concept of grace is first called mercy, or ‘hesed’ in Hebrew: the ever-faithful, covenant-bound, infinite and eternal love of God. All God’s power for renewal and resurrection proceeds from this source, never from punishment. Jesus punishes nobody! I would go so far as to call grace the primary revelation of the entire Bible. If we miss this message, all the rest is distorted and even destructive. I cannot emphasize this strongly enough.”
As he says, if we miss that God is for everyone, that God loves everyone and that His grace is for the entire World, all creation, if we miss that Jesus is not for punishment but instead for the love and redemption of all and consequently gives this wonderful grace and love to everyone then as we have seen many times throughout history, the Bible can be used destructively for division or to support personal agendas rather than as a value system on how live in grace and love of all God has created.
Jesus is Good News for everybody, always! In the middle of the chaos and questions that this world and life poses, it might be the better weather, but the song ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley keeps going round my head. “Don’t worry about a thing, ‘cause every little thing is gonna be alright”. In a sense, that is what we can have hope in because of Jesus, and this hope can live in us by the power of the Spirit. In the end, everything will be all right. History is set on an inherently positive and hopeful tangent, because of the resurrection we have hope and truly can believe eventually that, ‘Every little thing is gonna be alright!’ You cannot quell the Good News! As author Clarence W. Hall says:
“The resurrection of Jesus changes the face of death for all His people. Death is no longer a prison, but a passage into God’s presence. Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won’t stay there. You can nail it to a cross, wrap it in winding sheets and shut it up in a tomb, but it will rise!”
May this hope that rises in all circumstances even in the face of death both define your Easter and your life as we continue to hope in the resurrection and the life we are given in Jesus and live by the Spirit.

Children’s Easter Party

BSBC will be hosting our annual Children’s Easter Party on the afternoon of Saturday, April 5. All children, ages Pre-K to Grade 5, and their families are welcome! Please join us for games, crafts, and more as we look towards Easter Sunday!
East Coast Brass Concert
Saturday, April 12 | 3:00 – 4:30 pm | Sanctuary
Easter calls for a celebration! Since we were not able to secure Gabriel and his trumpet, we’ll have as our special guests East Coast Brass. Join us in-person on April 12 at 3:00 pm for a concert of exciting music for brass. Spanning many styles — there will be something for everyone. The offering goes to these talented musicians.
Palm Sunday Worship Services
Sunday, April 13 | 10:30 am | Contemporary, Traditional, and Mandarin
Join us on Palm Sunday as we continue to prepare for Easter, join us for the celebration of Palm Sunday in both our Contemporary and Traditional services. On Palm Sunday we recall the story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, greeted by people waving palm branches to celebrate the arrival of the King. It is a reminder to welcome Jesus into our hearts and to be willing to follow him afresh this season.
A Palm Sunday Service of Music for Holy Week “Here is Love”
Sunday, April 13 | 6:30 pm | Sanctuary
You are invited to attend A Service of Music for Holy Week on Palm Sunday at Brunswick Street Baptist Church. The Sanctuary Choir will be joined by several soloists, vocal ensembles and instrumentalists to offer a time of worship focused on the theme "Here Is Love". The events of Holy Week will be recounted in musical selections, scripture readings and congregational singing. Please plan to join us. A free will offering will be received.
Maundy Thursday Worship Service
Thursday, April 17 | 6:30 pm | Sanctuary
Jesus gathered with his disciples in the upper room and gave them a new covenant “in his blood”. Knowing that we would need to be reminded of what he did for us, he used bread and wine so that we could actually hold these symbols of grace in our own hands. The Maundy Thursday service will be held in the sanctuary, hosted by Rev. Kevin Culberson. After the service of the Lord’s Table, we’ll hear the events that unfolded in Jesus’ life between the upper room and the cross. This will leave our hearts prepared to gather at Calvary.
Good Friday Worship Service with Grace Memorial and Faith Baptist Churches
Friday, April 18 | 10:30 am | BSBC Sanctuary
A Good Friday shared community worship service with BSBC, Faith Baptist, and Grace Memorial, will be hosted by BSBC. We will have a combined choir, contemporary worship and messages from Pastor Larry Matthews, Pastor Peter Lohnes and Pastor Ross Watters as we come together to remember the sacrifice God made on our behalf and the impact of Jesus sacrifice on our life today. On Good Friday we remember that, God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! John 3:16-17. Join us as we celebrate this Good News!
Easter Sunday Worship Services
Sunday, April 20| 10:30 am | Contemporary, Traditional, and Mandarin
Join us on Easter Sunday in both the Traditional and Contemporary worship services as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. We will remember and celebrate the significance of Jesus conquering death and giving the opportunity of restoration between anyone and God. Easter Giving Goal
Please consider making a special Easter financial gift this year as part of your celebration of the Lord's goodness. 3. Blended Baptism Worship Service: Sunday, March 23
Join us on Sunday, March 23 in the sanctuary for our Blended Baptism Worship Service where we will witness a Believer’s Baptism for people from both our gym and sanctuary congregations. Don’t miss this special opportunity to share in the joy of those taking this important step of faith.

4. A Time to Pray – A Season of Lent
The church body is invited to join Debbie Kierstead as she hosts a time of prayer in the sanctuary during this Season of Lent. Every evening, Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 9:00 pm in the sanctuary, anyone is welcome to come for any portion of time. The focus will be prayer, but worship and ministry will take place as the Lord leads. These weekly prayer times will wrap up on April 17th.
5. Good Friday Combined Choir
A Good Friday Combined Choir (GFCC) is forming to share three special selections at the Good Friday Service with Brunswick Street Baptist, Grace Memorial, and Faith Baptist Churches.

6. Volunteers Needed for Security

7. Reuniting with Lost Items
With all of the events that happened in the church over the last couple of weeks, we have accumulated a rather spectacular number of dishes that don’t normally reside in our main kitchen. On your next visit to the church, please take a walk through the kitchen to see if you can be reunited with your errant dishes. On your journey through the building, be sure to check the Lost and Found, as well as the mail slots in the Connections Centre. Have fun being reunited with your lost items!

8. Days for Girls Update
Our trip to Honduras was an incredible experience. I am so grateful for all of the volunteers and supporters whose hard work made this trip a reality! Thank you for your many hours of sewing and creating those beautiful kits. Our local team wouldn’t be as successful if it weren’t for the generosity of BSBC.
Our New Brunswick team, represented by myself (Liz) and by my sister Kathryn, brought 303 kits (That’s six duffle bags folks!) to women and girls in villages surrounding Comayagua and Tegucigalpa. We joined DfG leaders Lois North from Comox BC and Teresa Groenewegen from Haut-St-Laurent QC, for these distributions.
Each kit was accompanied by important health and safety information, on a range of topics including menstruation, sexual health and personal safety.
We were very fortunate to have the support of Comayagua Rotary and Tegucigalpa Rotary members who provided travel, our accommodation, safety and wonderful friendship! These local leaders also presented the Ambassador of Women’s Health education in Spanish. Fabulous partners in this distribution!
In all, 570 kits were distributed. As we distributed them, and observed the gratitude with which they were received, I understand more fully the value of each kit. Yes, a sustainable solution to menstrual poverty, and together with the education, it represents a vehicle for hope and opportunity.

One Conference is back in Moncton this year, running from 6:00 PM on Friday, May 30, to 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 31. This is an incredible opportunity for youth to connect with other churches and experience a powerful weekend together. Before March 30, the early bird registration fee is $80. Scouting Boys: Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:00 pm
BSBC offers an exciting scouting program for boys from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Through outdoor adventures, engaging activities, and meaningful community service projects, boys learn to live out the Great Commission—growing in their love for God and serving their neighbors.
Sunday School: 9:30 – 10:15 am
Join us for Sunday School, a time of learning and growth for our children and youth, from Pre-K to Grade 12. While the kids explore age-specific teachings about the Gospel, parents can enjoy tea, coffee, and fellowship in the Connection Centre and Family Room.
Hands-In Girls Ministry: Tonight! Wednesday, March 19
We are calling all elementary-aged girls to join us this evening, Wednesday, March 19th, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for our once-a-month girl's Hands-In ministry. Our Leadership & Discipleship Training takes place every Wednesday evening from 6:45-8:00 PM. This is a time for youth to develop leadership skills, brainstorm ideas, and explore how to implement them within youth ministries. We are having a youth collab night next Friday, March 28! All youth grades 6 to 12 are invited to join us at Corbett Church, 55 Corbett Avenue, Fredericton NB E3A 3X3, for a collaboration night with Corbett, Journey Church and BSBC youth. We will be playing high-energy games, so come prepared with indoor shoes, to have lots of fun and meet new people!
Greenhouse Service: Sunday, March 30th, 10:30 am
Coming up Sunday March 30, we have our youth-led Greenhouse Youth Worship Service on the third floor! All those who are grade 6 – 12 are welcome to join for this time of worship together. Come along for fellowship, food, and learning more about how Jesus intimately works in our lives!

13. Fresh Start Young Adults: Tuesdays
Our Young Adults ministry, Fresh Start, will meet on Tuesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, on the 3rd floor of the Family Life Center. Come along for some fun, snacks and social time followed by a Bible study. We would love to see you there!

14. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: March 23
This Sunday in the Sanctuary, we will have a Blended Baptism Service, celebrating baptisms from both our contemporary and traditional congregations. Jon Wilton will lead the worship team, with special music from the Sanctuary Choir, a Girl’s Choir, and David Steeves, as we come together for this special time of worship and renewal.
Dr. Keith Bodner will be preaching at our combined service in the sanctuary. Of his sermon titled “The Experience of Baptism”, he says, “On this special Sunday morning we will take the plunge with a short message on the theology of baptism as we celebrate this defining step of faith with our candidates. Two passages in particular will guide our conversation this morning. First, there is an episode in 2 Kings 5 where the foreign military commander, Naaman the Syrian, has a remarkable encounter with the prophet Elisha and is cleansed in the waters of the Jordan River in what appears to be a powerful prototype of the baptism experience in the New Testament. Secondly, we will briefly review the events of Jesus’ own baptism in Matthew 3:13-17—including John’s question about righteousness, the Holy Spirit alighting like a dove, and the words of Father—and suggest several points of immediate application for all of us at TheStreet.”

16. Pastoral Care
Your Deacons want to affirm that BSBC is equipped to provide Pastoral Care. We are grateful for the engagement of Rev. Ross and Pastor Nikki, and we are blessed to have additional support from Rev. Kevin Culberson, sanctuary Ministry Coordinator and the Baptist Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and Doug McAllister, our Benevolent Coordinator and Senior’s Visitation Pastor.
Here are some suggested approaches:
Hospitalizations
• Your pastors will only know of hospitalizations if the church office or individual pastors are contacted directly
• We’d appreciate you notifying the office if you know of the hospitalization of a member of the BSBC family
Critical Incident
• If a pastor is needed in an emergency situation, between Monday to Friday, 8:30 am and 4 pm, please contact the church office
• Outside of office hours, please contact a pastor directly
Bereavement
• Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin will be available to support families at a time of loss, to conduct funeral and committal services
• Contact the church office during office hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm
• Outside of office hours, please contact a pastor directly
• We have provided McAdams, Bishops, and York Funeral Homes with the contact information for both Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin
• If you are not a member of a bereaved family but know of a death within the BSBC family, please contact the church office to make sure your pastors are aware of the need
Parish Nurses
The parish nursing ministry is intended to support and strengthen the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of individuals, families, and the congregation at BSBC. Roz Thompson and Cheryl Gibson, your parish nurses, collaborate with members of the pastoral team promoting health and faith, to facilitate the healing of the body, mind, and spirit. The parish nurses are available to provide prayer and support for physical, mental, and spiritual health challenges.

17. Bereavement
Harriett McNeill
With great sorrow, we regret to inform you that Harriett McNeill passed away on March 10, 2025, at Hospice House.
Please pray for her sons, Kris and Dale. Thank you for praying. In the past weeks, Harriett has experienced the peace and strength that only God can give. Your prayers matter.
A Celebration of life was held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, 161 York St, Fredericton, NB at 3 PM with Pastor Ross Watters officiating. A reception followed. An interment to be held at a later date.
Donations in Harriett’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer society and Hospice House Fredericton. Condolence may be shared at www.yorkfh.com.

Tommy passed away quietly March 17th, 2025 at the Dr Everett Chalmers Hospital in his 94th year. He was a brother-in-law of Lois Boldon.
