1. Fall Letter from the Pastor’s Office

One of the most striking differences we have found as a family between Scotland and Canada is the beauty of the Fall season here. The changing colors, sunny weather and beauty of the season is incredibly striking and has quickly become a time of year we really look forward to (not to mention the joy of a few less bugs!). I find it almost impossible therefore, when praying about and contemplating the Fall letter, not to think of the beauty of trees and plant life. Around that concept I am reminded of the kind of rooting I long for as I live life. To live in the reality of Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3: 14 - 19, where he states:

“For this reason, I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

I long for more of this rootedness in my life. To be rooted and established in love – what a beautiful phrase. That everything that flows out of me as a person, my words, actions, intentions, thoughts, hopes and dreams would all flow from a deep understanding of my identity in Jesus, to be ‘filled to the measure of the fullness of God.’ I am captivated by this vision of the Church we are called to be, rooted and filled in ways such as this, so that we become more and more a community of grace, love and support. That we uphold and encourage one another, both creatively and intentionally to live out our new identity, and consistently and lovingly call others to that same hope and newness of life. Rich Villodas in his book ‘The Deeply Formed Life’ shares this thought about a redwood tree’s root systems and what a beautiful example of the community we are called to be. Villodas writes:

“Redwood trees are centred and strong because their roots are robustly intertwined with each other. The roots often go only five or six feet deep, but they extend outward up to a hundred feet from the trunk. Each tree is deeply sustained by the larger, wider system of roots that provides stability, enabling them to grow high into the sky.”

So, being rooted in this manner as a community of faith is something incredibly beautiful and powerful, devoted to our Saviour and upholding one another, we start to become more and more ambassadors of our God. I continue to pray that people can indeed look at our church here at Brunswick Street, and lives beyond these walls and say similar to that of the apostles, that we are ordinary people who have been with Jesus. That the fruit of our life and actions would point to a love and hope far greater than anything this world can provide. The fruit of a rooted life such as this is so beautifully expressed in Psalm 1, where we are told:

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

This comparison of being like a tree planted by a stream bearing fruit in season does not however mean life will be glorious always, or that God will necessarily protect us, or do what we want. Very often my hopes or ambitions come from a place of pride, longing for comfort or things of this World, and while God absolutely cares for my needs, His purposes are always to make me more and more like Jesus. Unfortunately, this rarely happens through ease, but much more often through trial. As Alphonsus Liguori, eighteenth century founder of the Redemptorists, wrote:

“Persecutions are to the works of God what the frosts of the winter are to plants; far from destroying them, they help them to strike their roots deep in the soil and make them more full of life.”

O to be more full of life! So, as we return from a summer which I pray has been a good and grace filled time for all of you we will be beginning much of our Fall Programming again. If you wish to start a small group or Bible study to encourage our ‘root systems’ to grow, please contact the church office with a brief syllabus so we can advertise it and keep an eye on the Banner and Church announcements for what is available! Also, please engage with the church contact cards if you wish to take up volunteering or need any further information on anything church related and don’t forget, we also have a RightNow Media account at the church so if you would like access to all of the amazing teaching and resources available on there, just let us know and we can provide you with access!

I will close by sharing one of my favourite prayers in the Bible which was shared by the Executive Minister of our denomination this year at Oasis, where the vision for the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada (CBAC) was shared about becoming ‘Hope Filled Churches’. It is from Romans 15:13, and it says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

2. Blended Worship Service: September 1

On September 1, we will be hosting a blended worship service. On this Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend, both our English and Mandarin congregations will be joining voices to worship the risen Lord with contemporary music. We invite you and any arriving university students to join us in the sanctuary as we celebrate at the Lord’s table. The service will start at 10:30 am. We hope to see you there!


3. Volunteers Needed for Fall BBQ: September 8

Hi Church Family,

You may have noticed that this newsletter has a recurring theme. This week, we are all about a return to fall and fall programming. And, coming right up is our Fall BBQ! The bouncy castle and the Sno-Cone machine have been reserved. Now, we just need some family members to help with the setup, serving, and tear-down on the day.

Specifically, we are looking for help in the following areas:

Morning Setup Crew from 9:00 – 10:00 am: to setup canopies for BBQs, seniors’ seating, BBQs, tables for serving, Snow-Cone table, tables and chairs for seniors, chairs around the parking lot, and garbage cans.

Kitchen Crew from 9:00 – 10:00 am: to prepare veggie trays, drink coolers, and unwrap hotdogs.

Snow-Cone Crew from 11:05 am – 12:40 pm: to bring supplies out, start processing ice, and serving Sno-Cones.

Lunch Setup Crew from 11:15 – 11:40 am: to stuff hotdogs, bring out condiments, veggies, potato chips, plates, napkins, cups, and beverages.

Serving Crew from 11:40 am – 12:40 pm: Serve hotdogs and seniors’ tables.

Clean Up Crew from 12:40 pm – 1:30 pm: Start clean up; take down, clean and put away BBQs, tables, chairs, canopies, garbage cans, clean up dishes, kitchen, and parking lot.

4. Baptisms at the Lake

On Sunday September 1st, after our blended morning worship service together in the Sanctuary, we have a celebration, and you are invited!

After Church, we will gather at the beach at Killarney Lake for a picnic (please bring your own) and games together, followed by a small service and some lake baptisms.

We can't wait to share this day with you all (weather permitting)!

5. Call for Fall Programming

What a great summer! Another few short weeks and fall will be here. We are looking ahead to the September calendar and are thinking about booking rooms and resources for Bible studies, prayer groups, community potlucks, exercise groups, meetings and other gatherings.

If you are looking to reserve space for your Bible study, Small group, or meeting at BSBC this fall, please click the following link and provide us with the name of your group, a syllabus for your small group or Bible study, your preferred day, time and location. The syllabus should include the number of weeks in duration with the title for each week’s session with a short overview and scriptures for each class. Once these details are provided, we will start advertising two weeks in advance of the start date of your program.

Or: Please email socialmedia@bsbc.nb.ca with the name of your group, a brief explanation of the content, your preferred day, time and location.

Due to limitations of space, rooms will be reserved on a first requested, first booked basis.


6. Muffin Ministry

On behalf of our brothers and sisters who make a weekly evening trek around the city to visit those sleeping rough, and the members of your Social Action Team, thank you ‘muffin makers’ for your faithfulness serving in this way.

Our schedule is open from now until the end of 2024. We require 3 dozen muffins each week. If you are able to help in this way, please place 12 muffins, individually wrapped, in a large zipper locked bag, and label the bag “Street Ministry”. Don’t forget to include your name and the delivery date for which you signed up. You can place the labeled muffins in the upright freezer in the main kitchen.

Please click the link below or call the church office (506-458-8348) and our admin team will be pleased to do the online registration for you. Jesus spoke of offering cups of cold water in his name. Muffins, we believe, offer the same opportunity to bless others for him.


7. Sanctuary Choir Start Up

The Sanctuary Choir will begin rehearsals on Wednesday September 4, 2024, at 6:30pm in the Choir Room. All who enjoy singing (age 12 - senior adult) are encouraged to be part of this Music Ministry in our church. New members are very welcome to join us! If you are new to choral singing and would like to give it a try, please join us any Wednesday throughout September! Please speak to David Steeves or Gloria Tranquilla if you have questions!


8. Grief Share Start Up

If you are suffering the loss of a loved one, Grief Share, a Christian-based video-discussion support group, is being offered in the Family Room of the Family Life Center at Brunswick Street Baptist Church starting Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 7-9 pm for 14 weeks. Please call 458-8348 for information and to register.


9. Report on OASIS

The CBAC Oasis gathering at Crandall University in Moncton on August 8-10 was an event that was informative, inspiring, and definitely a spiritual oasis of renewal and hope for today and the future of Baptists in Atlantic Canada. With 500+ attendees from Atlantic Baptist Churches, and our partners Canadian Baptist Ministries, Crandall University and Acadia Divinity College, Oasis reflected our diverse but unified voice and spirit in worship and mission. Thursday evening set the tone of Oasis as CBAC Executive Minister, Renee MacVicar extended the call to be hope-filled churches that overflowed with hope-filled mission in our communities and world (Romans 15:13).

Crandall University President, Dr. Bruce Fawcett highlighted their 75th Anniversary and the continued growth in student enrollment, international student enrollment, along with new programs to prepare students to be Christian leaders as they engage a changing world.

The Business sessions reflected a spirit of hope as a renewed CBAC staff structure was introduced, promoting connection and providing resources to our churches. As well, we celebrated the acceptance of God’s Army Community Fellowship from the Halifax Association as a new member of CABC. This Filipino congregation has a vision for local ministry as well as mission projects in the Philippines which are already engaged.

Canadian Baptist Ministries highlighted their 150th Anniversary and announced their continued ministry in a changing world. It was reported that our mission partners world wide are asking if pastors are needed in North America, because they are ready to send them here!

Acadia Divinity College President, Dr. Anna Robbins reported growth in student enrollment as well as new degree programs that promote Spiritual and Mental Health needs in our churches.

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Buchannan was insightful, inspirational, and led us into God’s presence. I was motivated and filled with Hope to walk with God more intentionally both physically and spiritually, trusting Him in these challenging days. This phrase caught my ear and I will repeat it often in the days to come, “God doesn’t have problems; God has a plan!”

I walked away from Oasis blessed, excited, and looking forward to what God will do through me and our churches. What will be heard about God’s work among us at Oasis next year? Better yet, plan now to attend Oasis next year and experience it first hand!

Day 8, August 21: Psalm 139:23-24

Pray for members of the search committee to have humble hearts before God that are pure and Christ-like as they work through this process. Ask God to reveal your heart to you. Ask Him to show you those areas He wishes to work in your life to make you more like Christ. Pray for unity within BSBC, specifically that we would work together with understanding and compassion in our hearts. Pray for our future Senior/Lead pastor, that their heart remain humble and pure before God.

Day 9, August 22: Ephesians 6:10-11

Pray with understanding that searching for a pastor is primarily a spiritual process, so spiritual warfare will be present. Pray for God’s protection on the search committee, BSBC, and our future Senior/Lead pastor and their family.

Day 10, August 23: 2 Timothy 2:1-2

Pray for our future Senior/Lead pastor and their family to be strengthened by the grace of Jesus Christ. Pray that our future Senior/Lead pastor will be a faithful disciple-maker.

Day 11, August 24: James 1:5-8

Pray for the search committee to seek God’s wisdom. Pray for church leaders to seek God’s wisdom in the interim period.

Day 12, August 25: Colossians 1:9-12

Pray for our future Senior/Lead pastor and their family to be certain that it is God’s will to transition. Pray the Father will be glorified in the pastor search process.

Day 13, August 26, Acts 2:41-42

Pray for BSBC to reflect on these six elements of a healthy church: worship, discipleship, ministry, fellowship, evangelism, and prayer. Pray that our future Senior/Lead pastor will be equipped by the Holy Spirit to develop these elements at BSBC.

Day 14, August 27, 1 Peter 3:8-12

Pray that we at BSBC would learn to listen to and respect one another and work together towards a common goal of harmony. Pray for unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and humble minds. Pray that we would be a family that honors our Father with the way we love one another.


11. NB Christian Ashram Report

The NB Christian Ashram was held between August 8 and August 11 at Beulah Camp and Conference Centre at Browns Flat on the beautiful Saint John River. The Christian Ashram is an interdenominational Christian Retreat that provides an opportunity for worship, fellowship and to take time away from the normal hustle and bustle of life. The founder of the international movement was Dr. E. Stanley Jones in 1930. He was a well-known missionary in India, an evangelical and an author. The central theme is acceptance and the recognition that "Jesus is Lord".

The New Brunswick Christian Ashram was first held in 2000 and has met every year since, except during the COVID period. This year the Evangelist was Rev. Gordon Thompson, a graduate of Wycliffe College in Toronto. He served in active ministry in the Anglican Church of Canada in New Brunswick for 34 years. His theme this year addressed the question "Who is Jesus Christ? ".

The Bible Teacher was The Rev. Dr. Phyllis Nesbitt, an ordained minister in the Congregational Church of Canada. Her theme was related to disciples of Jesus Christ who have experienced denial and restoration. Her presentations were based on the life of Peter in the gospels.

The music ministry was led by the Patriquin Family and Friends of Rusagonis, NB. Worship of the Lord through traditional and contemporary song is central at the Christian Ashram. This year, the worship also included an interpretative dance by Nicole Thibault of Oromocto Baptist Church.

One of the key elements of the Christian Ashram is the small groups of 6 to 8 people who share their experiences and their walk with the Lord in an open, friendly and confidential environment.

Perhaps one of the most memorable parts of the proceedings are the stories of the Lay Witnesses. This year one of the Lay Witnesses was from the group Celebrate Recovery in the Saint John Area. That person spoke of how the Lord provided the way for her recovery from addictions. The second person, Rick Nagle, an accountant, spoke of how he recovered from emergency brain surgery in a way that he can only describe as a miracle in his life through his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

This year seven people from BSBC were in attendance. You will recognize them from the attached picture. Those interested to know more about the NB Christian Ashram should feel free to contact any of the seven people in the picture. You may also view the web site at the link below. Recordings of the presentations at the 2024 Christian Ashram and previous gatherings are also available through this web site.

The 2025 NB Christian Ashram is already scheduled for Thursday August 7 to Sunday August 10! By the way, there are a range of accommodations on site and the meals are great.

12. Fresh Start Young Adults: Tuesdays

Our Young Adults ministry, Fresh Start, will meet on Tuesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, on the 3rd floor of the Family Life Center. Come along for some fun, snacks and social time followed by a Bible study. We would love to see you there!

Come on out for our final youth group of the summer August 22nd, 6:30 – 8:30pm. We will be at Killarney Lake for fun in the water, snacks, tunes, and good time of gathering celebrating the summer. If your youth need a drive please contact Pastor Nikki or Ellie. Youth are to bring a modest bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, goggles and/or any other water related items. We look forward to seeing you all there.


14. This Sunday’s Worship Gatherings: August 25

This Sunday, the worship team in the gym will be led by Illyana Vermeersch. In the sanctuary the worship team will be led by Emmett Flores and David Steeves, with special music from Beth Snow.

Pastor Ross will be preaching on the Good Samaritan in the Sanctuary. Keith will be preaching in the Gym. Of his sermon titled, Summer Sizzle, he writes, As our informal “Summer Sizzle” series through the months of July & August draws to a close, we will both wrap up one season and look toward another. Anticipating our Fall series on the Sermon on the Mount in the book of Matthew, this week’s message will pave the way by exploring few scenes earlier in the book in order to set the stage. The story of Jesus in the First Gospel has amazing correspondences with the events of Exodus, ranging from a genocidal tyrant and magicians, to a journey through water and trials in the wilderness. Matthew is encouraging us to understand afresh the rescue mission of Jesus, as we are brought out of slavery and toward the promised land of the new covenant.

Whether in-person or online, be sure to join us this Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

Your Deacons want to affirm that BSBC is equipped to provide Pastoral Care. We are grateful for the engagement of Rev. Ross and Pastor Nikki, and we are blessed to have additional support from Rev. Kevin Culberson, the Baptist Chaplin at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and Doug McAllister, our Benevolent Coordinator and Senior’s Visitation Pastor.

• Your pastors will only know of hospitalizations if the church office or individual pastors are contacted directly

• We’d appreciate you notifying the office if you know of the hospitalization of a member of the BSBC family

• If a pastor is needed in an emergency situation, between Monday to Friday, 8:30 am and 4 pm, please contact the church office

• Outside of office hours, please contact a pastor directly

Bereavement

• Rev. Ross and Rev. Kevin will be available to support families at a time of loss, to conduct funeral and committal services

16. Bereavement

Robert Arthur Read

In the early morning of Sunday August 18, Robert Arthur Read peacefully took his last breath in his home and is now with his Saviour. Please be in prayer for his family: Karen (Richard) Siwik, Stephen (Michele) Read, and Eleanor (Dan) Wilton.

Visitation will be at McAdams Funeral Home Friday, August 23 from 4-7:00. A celebration of Robert’s life will take place at Brunswick St Baptist Church on Saturday, August 24 at 11:00. A reception will follow.

John B. MacLachlan Allaby

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John B. MacLachlan Allaby on August 18, 2024, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. John, a cherished member of the Fredericton community, was known for his dedication to both his art and his community service. He worked at UPS for 17 years before retiring in 2021 and ran a small graphic design business while being an active member of the Fredericton Society of Artists. John was deeply involved with Brunswick Street Baptist Church and volunteered with numerous organizations including the Fredericton Community Kitchen and L’Arche.

A funeral service will be held on August 31, 2024, at Brunswick Street Baptist Church, with a reception to follow. John will be interred at Maple Grove Cemetery on September 7, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Fredericton Community Kitchen, L’Arche, or a charity of your choice.


17. Community Events

CBIC Run for the Cure

The CIBC Run for the Cure is back in our area on October 6, and CIBC is looking for volunteers to help run the event.

In addition to volunteers on the committee, they need volunteers who will be available on the weekend of the event to help set up the site, welcome participants, set up equipment, dismantle the site and more.  

Here's how you can help:

• Register as a volunteer;

• Share the information around you;

• Print the attached poster and display it in your company or use your social media to share it with your customers.
